Was thinking of laminating some Mesquite and Maple to see how it would work. What is a good glue to use in light of the heat generated when smoking and the potential for glue failure and/or harmful fume release? Thanks

Re: Toxic Materials
It's not surprising Butternut (Juglans cinereais) an irritant to some people. It's a very close relative to Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) and English Walnut (Juglans regia). Walnut trees emit a lot of natural herbicides as a way to eliminate competition for nutrients and sunlight where they're growi...

Re: bevel on top of bowl
I found a place called "The Rock Shop". They have abrasives in various grits for rock polishing. I ordered a selection I plan on gluing to various size wooden balls and testing.

Re: Cosmetic repair question
A question from someone trying to gather info about carving pipes but with a knowledge of wood. Would drilling a very small hole at the beginning and end of crack to relieve stress and the potential for the crack to continue to run be worthwhile?

Re: Rustication Issues
EBay has rotary bits with very aggressive teeth. Also on the pfeifenfreun website is a simple to build hand powered rustification tool.

Re: Masking the rim for sandblasting?
I have used resist for glass etching. It comes in sheets (the type I used). Worked great but was not flexible enough for compound curves. Has anyone used liquid masking? It gets brushed on, let dry and when finished just peel off. Just a thought!

Re: advise on a finish of sorts.
Chemical etching is easy and you can make stencils yourself. However there is no colors just a frost look.

Re: Cherrywood
Most hardwoods are perfectly fine for pipes. Stay away from coniferous woods (too resinous) and rosewoods (too oily), but other than that, there are few woods that are unsuitable for pipes. Fruitwoods (apple, pear, lemon) are great for pipes. Oh, red oak is no good. It smells and tastes like cat pi...

New here and to pipe making/carving. I like to get as much knowledge of this subject between the ears before jumping in. Anyway is Ebony an acceptable wood to use? I am an old retired Seabed Builder so I realize it's hard as heck. Besides that has it been used with success? Being hard it will finish...

Re: bevel on top of bowl
I would buy the abrasive from a rod parts supply like Mudhole or similar.

Re: bevel on top of bowl
I used to make custom fishing rods. In making grips from scratch I would make my own reamers from disgarded sections of rod blanks. Applied epoxy glue to them and then grit needed into the glue. Once set they worked better than commercially made reamers. The same could be done with wood balls in a s...

Thanks for your kind comments. I always try to jump in with both feet in anything I do. Doesn't make sense not to. I have some things working against me however, A.O.E. and it's effects. I will immerse myself in the learning of the technical side and enjoy the work and see if the artistic side appea...

Hello, I'm new here but old. I've always been fascinated by the process and the art of making pipes. At my age I know I don't have the time left to master the knowledge never mind the art. I do however want to learn what I can in my remaining years. Thanks for having me. Sent from my HTC0P3P7 using ...

Hi, I'm new here and just started browsing the site. Have made a few knives, silver jewelry and other things. I acquired a Harbor Frieght cabinet and use a contractor's compressor with great success.
