Re: Securing Finished Stems for Drilling

George, you had me there for a moment, when you were centering the stem on the drill press rig, using a tool steel blank in the draft hole. I thought your paper diagrams were showing the draft hole likely off-center. But then I caught up again later when you showed the flexibility of filing the thre...

Okay, you're starting to develop a language, here. Ala Henry Moore. Now the truck is to make the whole block speak the same dialect. That square 'window' on the top is decidedly speaking Greek....

Re: Mixing oil dyes from powder

I can't speak from experience (on pipes anyway, but this is what I use on spoons), but you might try walnut oil.
Dries really fast, doesn't go rancid, and smells nice... It's a touch yellow on its own....

Howdy, and welcome! I'm originally from upstate, too. I grew up in Webster, just outside of Rochester, and went to my undergrad at Alfred. I've lived on the west coast for over 20 years, but you know what they say..... the east coast stays in your back pocket for when you need it... Card scrapers?? ...

Re: What lathe to get?

Just saw a video about how Dunhill pipes are made. It was interesting that the video showed them using a wood lathe. I have no idea if that is typical at Dunhill or just what they chose to show in the video. do you have a link to this video? is love to see it. Sent from my bloopty-bloop, using hoot...

Yup, I've got a few of those in different shapes and sizes, and they work great..... I've got 20 to 30 pipes on them and still cutting ribbons. Can't speak to where they'll be after a few hundred....

It would be helpful to arrange your shots more straight on, and not angled. They're is a sticky post about the angles to shoot for best consideration and critique. If you want useful advice, then you'll need to provide helpful views. As for the taper on the shank, you want some, for sure. We can deb...

okay, maybe there's not a right answer here, and I'm in the middle of TIAFOing, so maybe I'll answer my own question, but looking for some group-think here:

With a blasted bulldog, better to cut the beads before or after the blasting?

They shut down, and then a year or two later, I got an email from Josefinasomethingorother saying that they had taken over and were selling briar again. So I placed an order, and it did indeed seem to be Jaume on the other end after all, certainly he remembered me, and the briar looked really good,...

Makis's stuff is great, Mimmo's stuff is great, Manno's stuff is great. High value across the board. For a little more, the wood from Calabria Pipe is stupid good. I've also had plenty of excellent wood from Jaume over the years. I was able to visit the Jaume shop a few years back. The coolest expe...

Did the original stem get the ol' test-the-ivory-with-a-hot-safety-pin-test???

Great pipe and great new stem, George. Thanks for sharing that one.....

Re: Big catch. Ruined Stummel.

I'm using a Robert Sorby carbide tool. Square cutter. Should not catch. I'm thinking I need to come in from the side and not from the front. Question: When using the square carbide scraper tip am I supposed to fully engage the whole front edge of the tip, or just angle it in, or just the corner of ...

what tool were you using? I have had zero luck with gouges or other similar tools turning a pipe, like I would use turning a bowl or a box. I do all my hand held tool turning for pipes with a flat scraper. that being said, I do use a metal lathe, and can turn things cylindrical using the compound......

Not more fiddling, just a chuck with pins: https://rawkrafted.com/tools/chucks/briar-chuck-two-jaw-self-centering-with-pins/ Yup, that's the chuck. Re: PITH 2020!

I've had a similar issue with those Jaws in a Nova chuck.... If the block isn't dead square, the chuck had too much flex. Currently I'm having much better luck with the chuck Premel is carrying.... but here's how I got around it: Try and square the chuck as well as possible first. then when you make...

Another thing to think about is the shape of your chamber bit. I've been using a much pointier shape which gives me more meat below the chamber.
