Re: First Billiard in Progress - Feedback Appreciated

Really appreciate the encouragement everyone. I've taken the bowl down as close as I could to LL's recommendations (I think...) while still having some semblance of a rim. I'll post pics once it's finished. Thanks again!

I'm pretty sure my wife would kill me

So I've been keeping an eye on the local CL for a metal lathe. I admittedly don't fully know what I'm looking for beyond the typical minimum size/brand recommendations, but when you guys say to get more lathe than you think you'd ever need, this isn't what you mean, right? https://raleigh.cr...

Man that's pretty. You've done that whole "stem too nice for the stummel" thing again, though!

Re: First Billiard in Progress - Feedback Appreciated

Your approach & thought processes are ideal for learning pipe making. Provided you have good hand-eye coordination and a delicate touch (both of which, to a significant extent, people are either "born with" or not), you're going to do well at this, I think. :D Very much appreciated! T...

Re: First Billiard in Progress - Feedback Appreciated

The chamber is a bit on the large side for the proportions. You need to slim up the bowl a bit when compared with the shank (about where George put the lines). To do so will require you to make the rim too thin. Not that it will burn out, just visually too thin. Something to keep in mind for the ne...

Re: First Billiard in Progress - Feedback Appreciated

PERFECT. Thank you so much! So, as I said above, I literally combed through every billiard critique in the gallery (obviously more helpful if the pictures are still up), and have been watching and rewatching (and taking notes on) your videos about polishing "the crease." So here's the funn...

Re: Pot

Hey Brian- I'm still very much a novice at this, but there are two things that jump out to me: - You can open up that slot to create more of a funnel - Kurt's method of using a small drill bit has been working relatively well for me (and will do so more consistently once my skills improve  ). -...

First Billiard in Progress - Feedback Appreciated

Hey Everyone- I know this is a little unorthodox to post unfinished work, but I'm in the midst of working on my first billiard as per the board's recommendation, and since I'm trying to teach my hands as well as my eyes, I figured having you guys take a look at this point probably isn't a bad idea. ...

Re: Billiard #2

So - let me start by saying that this comes with the world's biggest rock of salt, as I'm actually in the process of carving my first billiard - very much in the same boat you are, I don't love them but I know that doing them and getting critiqued will help me get better. That being said, in plannin...

Re: Long Belated (and Long-winded) Introduction

Yeah, my eyes don't see anything at all wrong with that guitar. Although I've done a bit of dabbling with electronics, I'm going to make my life difficult by building a classical guitar for the first one...then hurry back to the realm of pipes where I know what I'm doing. I appreciate it. Honestly ...

Re: Long Belated (and Long-winded) Introduction

Very much appreciated, Jeremiah. I've been breathing and sleeping billiards the past few days and I'm actually starting to love the shape and am doing my best to build with patience, but I'm admittedly getting pretty excited about this one. Honestly, I think going pipes > guitars might be a smoother...

Long Belated (and Long-winded) Introduction

Hey Everyone- Realized I never did this when I joined, but probably should have. Been lurking on and off since maybe 2010(?) as life/time/other hobbies allowed, joined in 2012 and never posted until now. Despite having zero interest in other tobacco products, I picked up the pipe at 16 - my dad smok...

Re: Crosspost from Facebook: First Non-kit Pipe

Many thanks Jakub and Charl. I've decided to take everyone's advice and do a billiard next - and to that end, I've devoted myself to running through every single billiard gallery post and read every piece of feedback (admittedly those are best when the pictures are still live), as well as reading th...

Re: Crosspost from Facebook: First Non-kit Pipe

Thanks guys - definitely appreciate it - I know getting torn down a bit is part of the process, and I wanted to rip that bandaid off because I do want to improve. First time posting but a pretty long time lurker, so I knew what I was in for! And yep, definitely a #2, with a little bit of #1. D...

I said be gentle!
In all seriousness, I definitely appreciate your feedback - and don't worry, I know I'm nowhere near where I'd need to be to sell anything (and would never let one go out the door that I didn't think was perfect - at least not for money).
Thanks!

Crosspost from Facebook: First Non-kit Pipe

As noted in the thread title, I'd posted this about a week ago on the Facebook page (and got some very constructive feedback from DocAitch, I believe), but would love to get more feedback in the event that there's not a ton of overlap on the FB page. Most of Doc's (much appreciated) feedback echoed ...
