Re: Achieving round stummels without a lathe
will post a photo next time its setup picture something like this, substitute the big cutter for a router. http://www.culture.gouv.fr/Wave/image/memoire/0695/ivr43_02250597x_p.jpg The line between handmade and machine-made pipes can get a bit fuzzy sometimes. I think this machine leans toward the &...

Re: Achieving round stummels without a lathe
I've used a router to round the bottom of the bowl with a 1" dia round over. router should be mounted horizontal and you need the bowl fit on a shaft that will pivot the stummel into the cutter to a stop then turn 180. makes quick work of excess material. takes some setup and test runs.

Re: Belt or disc sander
i use a 5" wheel with a velcro foam pad that can be removed. usually keep it off until after 120 then it helps for smoothing out contours. for refining tight corners with the foam padding off I use abranet discs at 220 and 320 they wrap around the edges of the backing enough sand with the edge ...

I think the big shank looks ballsy almost expect to see a r calabash nice to see it with the stem out, always miss when it's not in a photo set for stabilizing the mortise are we talking about ca? didn't realize that was a common practice isn't the usual just to dry the briar out well? btw on the to...

Re: Stem tightener?
had this idea seems like a good place to throw it out there. I fixed a shop pipe with a loose tenon with CA on q tip to coat the mortise. seemed to add a thou or two. its invisible, isn't any more exposed to the draft than the epoxy used to glue a delrin tenon in or the epoxy in a shank extension, ...

Re: vulcanite supplier
On another note I've been researching vulcanization and different methods for casting vulcanized rubber, found out making ebonite has been around since the 1800s. didn't know bowling balls are ebonite. I would like a bulk supply of stems for a line of simple cherrywood pipes like what ropp did. look...

Re: vulcanite supplier
I've spent a great deal of time sourcing out different products and I think Giudici is the only manufacter. There is always the missouri meerschaum stems which are $0.50 USD retail, probably half that for wholesale. Their minimum order is $100 for wholesale accounts. I may be placing an order with ...

I find my tripoli wheel likes to take the stain off around edges unless I use really light contact does the softer buff fix that? think currently using loose sewn cotton

Re: how deep is deep enough?
something I've learned about designing pipes for head shops, the bowls are always less deep to accommodate a smaller fill. in fact a bowl deeper than about one inch becomes less preferred because depending on the tobacco alternative smoked it's not always being packed to the top. it can be challengi...

Re: I wish I had one of these
is this one of the machines ropp used to for their shank extensions? the attachment on the headstock looks a bit like the ones you can get for slot mortising.

Re: vulcanite supplier
so giudici is really the only company still making vulcanite stems? Google doesn't bring up much on this. was hoping to find some shorter (and cheaper) stems than what's in their catalog for small modest pipes. I have a small frasising setup for my fruitwood pipes and distribution so want to keep pr...

vulcanite supplier
anyone know where to find a supplier for bulk vulcanite stems? I can get a good deal from PME on their specials and inventory clear out, for eg catalog 407 is a 2 1/2" saddle about 0.675 width. perfect size for this shape I'm making, problem is it's apparently only available on clear out and wh...
