Gents - I finally finished editing the video of making a boring bar similar to the one used by Former in that video of him making a pipe.

It's full of stars!
And that is the most kind thing I could say about that ebonite.

Re: PITH 2020!
Okay I’m struggling with this shape a little. A small crack developed in the mortise on the shank. I just wanna use this as a practice pipe now but should I even bother or move on to the next?? Also I know the shape is like a horny Rhodesian lol but I will gladly take advice. Please. I'd finish tha...

Re: Rhodesian workflow question.
I will often shape the shank and stem together, but only when I need a sharp "oneness" of the two. Catalog shapes where both are round are a prime example. In this case, it's the stummel held in a chuck, and the stem hangs out. I use a live center to jam it into place and ensure it won't m...

Re: High shine spots using shellac
Build up the shellac, as Sas said, don't try and put it all on at once with a thick coat.
Carnuba application is separate from shellac, and the process varies some. Sometimes I skip the carnuba altogether if the pipe is rusticated - depends on the pipe.

Re: Delrin tenon failure avoidance
Easy with a lathe, but most of the entry-level guys around here are using a drill press. How did I not see this earlier? :endofmankind: Honestly though, a drill press can be done similarly to a lathe. Just like a lathe, don't move anything but the quill between drilling and tapping. A drill bit and...

Re: Quiet (er) shop vac.
I just wear earpro. I wear it for a collection of activities, so it's just de rigueur for me.
I have seen some interesting attempts at making dust collectors quiet, but they all seem very expensive for the payoff when some disposable earplugs work just fine.

Re: PITH 2020!
Okay, so I'll start with the basic noob questions: Are the two bead lines on the stummel critical (in a classic sense, anyway)? Sometimes on rusticated or heavily blasted ones there is no bead. No, not critical, but necessary in most cases. It depends on the shape. If you are making a catalog shape...

Re: Are there any videos anyone would find helpful?
Can you post a video on how to wire the electricals on a 1970 ironhead chopper with both kick and electric start? I'm having a hard time figuring mine out. Thanks a ton. Those have electricicals?? Mine just had a hamster clicking a lighter every time the piston moved past TDC... Mines a somew...

Re: Are there any videos anyone would find helpful?
I've long wondered when it was better to use the electrically tunable exciton−plasmon coupling in a WSe2 monolayer embedded in a plasmonic crystal cavity approach, and when the improving defect-based quantum emitters in SiC via inorganic passivation was the way to go. Thanks. You rock! So....

Are there any videos anyone would find helpful?
I'm going to take a video of grinding a tool bit for tobacco chamber shaping tomorrow, as well as a video of it being employed (similar to a segment of a video of Former posted elsewhere on this site). Hopefully I'll get it shot and edited this weekend. That leads to a question - are there any proce...

Re: Chamber from toolpost?
I'll also throw this out to Kurt: would a spoon bit achieve the desired result as it is essentially a one-edged reamer? Just step it over on successive cuts. Hmm. Maybe. I don't think I would do that though. The relief angle on the underside of the cutter needs to be more pronounced than a spoon bi...

Re: Chuck and tool help.
Rule #1 about running a lathe: Never leave your chuck key in the chuck.
Or that's what I'm told. Guess where I routinely leave my chuck key.
I do it on purpose though, but only when there's no stock in the chuck, and as a visual safety reminder. OSHA doesn't govern my shop.

I know precious little about Dunhills, but I have read that the inner-tube is meant to provide a continuous airway without gaps.

Re: Chamber from toolpost?
Could I make one from a spade bit? Kurt do you maybe have an example to show? Yes - I'll dig one out and take a pic. I also have a need to make one (I changed my toolpost recently, and this video reminded me), and I can take video of that process. I would NOT make one from a spade bit.The shanks on...

Re: Chamber from toolpost?
That's essentially a boring bar. It only cuts from one side, and allows you to make the chamber as wide as you need it without having to have a drill bit of the exact size you need. They are very easy to make - all you need is some square stock (or round, depending on your toolholder) and a grinder....

Re: Chuck and tool help.
Nice! I'm happy to see you worked through it. When reassembling, be sure liberally lube it - not with liquid wrench, but with a good machine oil.
