Re: How many "file-made pipes" before upgrading to lathe?
4 inch x 60 inch belt sander... Would this be able to fill a variety of roles? Good to square up blocks and some initial block edge rounding, but that's it. Any belt grinder that's used for stummel shaping or stem work must be narrow enough that the two main "parts" of a pipe---the bowl a...

They are not readily available. You must replicate them using "casual" materials. Colored dots from plastic rod or wood, silver rings from aluminum tube, etc.

Re: How many "file-made pipes" before upgrading to lathe?
Interesting question It's tempting to assume that NOT going straight into doing things the way you'll end up doing them is a waste of time. Old School uber-craftsmen would probably argue that doing so will give you an understanding of the material(s) and processes that nothing else can, though. I'm ...

Re: 9mm filter drill bit
The easiest solution for everyone is to set the GOLP (Giant Orbiting Laser Platform) to vaporize the entirety of Germany and Holland, and individually zap any outlier/escapees elsewhere in the world who insist on giant filter pipes. Right? Right. A few people might get testy about it---think it's an...

Re: Pipe #1 - Uruss
A critique can only be as good as the photos. Most importantly, make sure to include dead-on-square profile shots from both sides. Top and bottom are usually helpful, too. Oblique views are mostly good for selling. They're glamorous, but contain surprisingly little information when it comes to pipe ...

Re: A question for the finishing gurus
Virgin finish, no wax, market it as a USP, move on with your life. Pretty much there. I stuck with it to hopefully discover something new (unprecedented?), and because I'm a stubborn son of a bitch. lol Trying to decide now between what you suggest and just blasting it, where smudginess doesn't rea...

Re: A question for the finishing gurus
No go on the shellac.
Top shelf stuff, properly mixed & strained, less than 48 hours old.
All the other-than-shellac attempts have also stayed soft.
The finishing process itself has happened at two different locations, so it isn't something weird in the air.

Re: Full-panel S. Bang billiard re-stem
A rare piece. Top carvers rarely mess with the "total panel" thing because it's so time consuming to get exactly right. Meaning they have to choose between losing money or dinging their reputation. Once in a while (maybe a commission?) they appear, though, unicorn style: Here's another un...

A question for the finishing gurus
This is NOT a joke, set-up, gotcha, or etc. in any way, shape, or form. Sounds impossible, but I'm 100% serious. I have a shaped briar stummel that handles, sands, and stains normally. Top grade. Straight grain, zero surface flaws of any kind, and none encountered during shaping. No finish of ANY KI...

Re: 9mm filter drill bit
On the chance that what SEEMS to be the same brand is actually different in Europe vs. US, I'd take what he says at face value (after double checking with him). The last thing you want is an otherwise spot-on commission to become a problem for him to smoke/deal with.

Re: Stems for sale
Some vendors just don't care about customer service anymore. Yeah, right? I wanted to buy a piece of ebonite from Trever last year, and POLITELY asked if he wouldn't mind attaching a piece of briar to it, and then carving the briar and rubber into a finished pipe. Hell, I said he could even choose ...

We all know it's because you're tired of your Living In France Memories being triggered every time you come across stuff like this, and repairing holes in walls gets expensive.

Re: my jurney, my pipes
Not bad at all. :D Unusual color and finish, but in a good way. The curved-shield-style button would be overly tall for most smokers, but some people like 'em that way. Props for tackling the tougher "Butera" style and (for the most part) pulling it off. The slot's top and bottom aren't qu...

Re: my jurney, my pipes
The good news? You are fearless. The bad news? You're trying to run before you can walk. "Jumping ahead" to imaginative & complicated shapes/designs has become a common theme among carvers who've had access to the Internet. The guys who pull such things off at a national/world-class le...

Re: 1920's "Swan Neck" Dunhill meets late 20th century Scandinavian Pipe
Pretty tricky business, that last one.
Probably easy to sell, too, since true LCs made back in the day are scarce & spendy... and yours is shaped better than 90% of them.

Yup. What you're talking about "bugged" my eye as well. It's something of an artifact of getting the lines to work from the top and oblique views too. Meaning "chasing it away" (I tried) introduced new problems when viewed from a different angle. As you know, it's a bit of a merr...

Definitely a bit different.
The whole "curvy" thing works well for all kinds of stuff. Here's a car that could have been inspired by a 1924 Dunhill CK:

. Never saw the concept done before, so Quinton Wells and I took a swing at it. Pretty big. Not a true giant, but just short of that: 8" long, 135 grams... the last shot has a Dunhill Grp4 Lovat (shape 40) in it for comparison purposes. https://i.postimg.cc/6qLvnq4V/P1050391.jpg https://i.posti...
