Re: PITH 2016!!!!!!
I'm beginning to think that I don't know what a military mount is. does it have a tenon at all? Or is it just a tapered rod that fits into a shank that has metal reinforcement? and if the latter, does it need the brass ring inside the shank as well as the cap outside? just one? can someone clarify E...

Re: PITH 2016!!!!!!
have we settled on the design then? Military mount is the only constraint? Or does it also have to be a remote car-starter?
and time line for completion on this PITH?

I'd love to join. Can you participate even if your last pipe caused something akin to a gag-reflex in the gallery?

looking at high end pipes and going to pipe shows are both tough...

Re: 2nd crack at squashed tomato. this time with cocobolo
ok thanks guys.
if I live to see the sun come up tomorrow, I'll go back to the drawing board
p.s. the stem/shank sucks because I broke the cutter on the lathe and had to free hand it. but thats my only excuse. I guess I just lack an aesthetic eye for this sort of thing.

I tried to take into account the previous criticisms, focusing on bowl symmetry and stem lines.

Re: does this stem still need a tenon?
Massis has highjacked this thread. This information was supposed to be for ME!!!!!!!
I was originally intending to try this on a drill press....is that a bad idea? a solid drill press vice, a sharp forstner bit to drill the hole, then a 5/16 to drill the mortice?

Re: does this stem still need a tenon?
could you give me a sense for how large the diameter of the countersink is? And so does one turn the stem down to get it into the countersunk part?

does this stem still need a tenon?
If Micah sees this: I hope you don't mind the pic.
how does one construct such a stem? Is there a mortise/tenon under that briar, or does the stem just taper in to the briar snuggly?

Re: looking for meerschaum of Charles Darwin
I am looking for a meerschaum pipe that is carved in the likeness of Charles Darwin. Have you ever seen such a pipe, and if so might you tell me where so that I could procure one? for example, here are meerschaum pipes that are carved in the likenesses of other people that are not Darwin and hence d...

Thanks Charl
-fair enough.
I'm doing another version of the same (only with more bend) and keeping the stem and shank in line on this one.

cool to see them so close in time.
did you pick the green cumberland or did the buyer? It seems a bit much with the spalted maple and the green and that nice finish all together....again personal preference.
lovely

Re: squashed tomato with boxwood
I don't think I wash harsh at all. Charl's comment is the equivalent of "I saw a flaw and so I stopped caring" but isn't one of the main utilities of posting here to get useful feedback and thereby improve? I knew the pipe was flawed. Thats why I posted pics. The day I make a perfect pipe ...

Re: squashed tomato with boxwood
Charl: as much as I respect your work, your criticism is pretty lame. why not just explain the problem and perhaps how to fix it?
I see the issue...but your comment gets me nowhere.
This is the kind of thing that underscores how helpful people like Jeremiah really are.
