Re: X,Y and Z adjustable custom drill press clamp
May I ask why don't you just use a typical pipemaking chuck (two jaws with centering pins) bolted to the table?

Re: sanding off base coat
I found that staining a pipe very early is a big mistake and does more damage than good. With grits like 60-180 you basically have a surface full of deep ridges torn out by the grains of abrasive. If you apply stain on that surface the capillary action coupled with the rough surface will make the st...
Re: juma
Nate and Premal said you can't use alcohol on the white (ivory) or carnelian because they dissolve. That sucks!! I've used the ivory grained Juma for decorations and I've considered making a stem out of it, but if what you guys say is true that would make it unusable for stems-I know most guys will...

Re: Bending Really Thick Stems
I don't think you should be using epoxy to glue delrin. There are special glues that are formulated to adhere to teflon/delrin. Also if we are talking about temperature issues it doesn't really matter how much you score the tenon and mortise- if you liquify the epoxy by heating it will give regardle...

Re: Bending Really Thick Stems
Use a heat resistant glue such as JB Weld.
A similar problem can occur with standard ebonite tenons that can get bent with excess heat. I put a stainless reinforcement in every tapered stem over 20mm thick, that keeps the tenon straight and prevents from messing up the stem/shank face allignment.

Re: FDA Legislation
Good topic! For those from outside the US of A, could you please give a summary of what's going on? I have a vague idea from several posts on FB but I haven't taken the time to read more in depth because most of the posts/articles are about cigars (not really my thing) and are written from an Americ...

Re: Slack sander
I use 2 meter long belts and they work very well. I also had a ceiling bracket but found out it was impossible to allign the holes for the bracket properly (I have brick walls, drilling into that is a pain in the ass, of course in America you make your houses out of cardboard so that's not an issue)...

Re: OK, it's time for another ShitStorm thread
I guess it's fine to do it that way, the problem is the pipe that came out looks nothing like the one it was based on... So a lot of wasted pencil lead

Re: Slack sander
third axle to increase the distance behind the belt You don't need that, just use big wheels and you'll have plenty of space. Get an adjustable tracking mechanism for your crowned wheel, a belt that moves around like the one on the video by timberwolfer is very difficult to work with and can do mor...

Re: #4 Zulu
Good job!! I think the guys are explaining a simple thing in a pretty convoluted way. What George meant, and it actually is the only major issue on this pipe, is that the mouthpiece is too wide. Looking from the top, the sides of the mouthpiece should go from shank to bit in a smooth line and the bi...

Re: Removing stain from Blasts
Just to expand on the subject a little bit: the steel wool trick only works to take stain off of the edges of the blast. It can be a very pleasing effect if you want to achieve a kind of worn, patinated (think very old dunhills after 80 years of handling) look. However, if you want to achieve a cont...

Try steel wool.
Re: #3 Zulu
That design comes closer to a horn. Try something in between, less cant than the drawing but still less heel than the one you made. If you like the shape just make as many as you can and try different variations, that way you can really learn which lines work and which ones don't.

Re: The Queue
If you like working with files get some Iwasaki small carving files. You can almost shape a whole pipe with those. I did that for some time but since I got better at the shaping disc I don't use them nearly as much. I almost regret it since shaping with files is really fun imho, slow, controlled an ...

Re: Sandblasting help
First of all, this discussion reminded me of a very true quote: "In metric, one milliliter of water occupies one cubic centimeter, weighs one gram, and requires one calorie of energy to heat up by one degree centigrade - which is one percent of the difference between its freezing point and its ...
