Re: AAA ebonite
I'd love to have a domestic source, so I hope they sort it out. Last fall they sent me a sample of their cumberland-esque rod from which I made a stem. I emailed them that is was very beautiful but not usable due to inclusions, never heard back.

Re: Kansas City Pipe Carving Contest??
SWEEEEEET pipe Jack! Can you post some more pics? Thanks! Jack, clearly you have Ernie fooled, but not me. That pipe has no tobacco chamber! Only a point where a chamber should be. Clearly, you are working for the same company that is trying to sell everyone's pipes from smokingpipes. :P http://pub...

Re: Kansas City Pipe Carving Contest??
That pipe looks so awesome I'm actually pissed off. Sorry. If it helps, I spent so much time sanding every last scratch out of those faces while keeping them flat that I started seeing faces in the birdseye. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. All work and no play makes Jack a dull ...

Re: Check This Out
I aspire to have a pipe on this site someday. I will re-dedicate my efforts. Everybody who's anybody has their pipes on this site. If you, Todd Johnson, and Bruce Weaver made decent pipes, you'd all be on there too. Ernie and me, we'uns got class. Rad Rad, that's pretty brave of you and Ernie to ju...

Re: Delrin or Delrin or Delrin...
McMaster is a good company. They won't sell junk, they have everything in stock, and they ship fast. I'd spend the extra nine cents a foot to buy from them. As for the white, I don't think it matters for a pipe tenon, I think they publish slightly different properties for the white. I have some, and...

Re: Turning Tool Plans
Sorby is a good name if you've got the coin. The tool I use the most is a big, heavy straight scraper that I bought on ebay planning to make something else out of it so I didn't care how cheap it was -- Benjamin's Best, I think. Cost about $20, works just fine when sharp, doesn't seem to get dull ap...

Re: Turning Tool Plans
I've got a drawer full of turning tools, but use a 1/8" parting tool and a big, heavy (3/4"?) straight scraper for stummels almost exclusively, and add a smaller scraper that I ground to sort of a parabolic curve for stems. I'd start with fewer tools and perfect your sharpening. In a turne...

Re: Your block preparation suggestions...
If you just trust the table you'll be off. Sort of like if you just trust the lathe chuck. :P Running away. Rad I guess. The thing is, if your chuck is square and rigid, you have one face flat, and you put the same face flat against the same jaw and hold it flat as you snug up you'll line up even i...

Re: Your block preparation suggestions...
Even if you get the block perfectly square, it can be out of whack in the lathe chuck. There are about 4 ways to get the block wonky in the chuck. Mark your centers wherever you can, and go by those when you're chucking the block on the lathe. Rad Not if the chuck is perfectly square and supe...

Look in "Buy, Sell, or Trade" for a thread titled "What do hand crafted pipes go for these days?" Or something like that. The topic has been covered pretty well there and in similar threads. You have to make the decision yourself.

Are the results of the carving contest posted anywhere? Seems weird that in this day of instant worldwide connectivity I can't get any news about it. Check your email, you bozo. Congratulations! Rad I did get the email, but a bit later in the day than my post here. When did you get yours? Thanks, I...

"Dear Jack:
Thank you for e-mailing Henkel Corporation. We appreciate your interest in our products.
All of our products are considered toxic even after they are cured. They are not FDA approved."
So there you have it. I guess if it's not FDA approved it must be toxic.

Re: Tokutomi-Bo Nordh-Dublin Canadians Detail - Stem-Shank Faces
For what it's worth, I don't use sandpaper on a stem face. I sharpen the tool fresh, and put a radius on the tip. I don't use carbide inserts any more for this, even when they're brand new the radius is too small. Very light final cut, very slow feed. This minimizes tool marks, but the machined surf...

Re: Epoxie Question
I wonder why the Loctite stuff is not recommended for potable water systems. Church Lady Voice: Maybe because it's made by SATAN !? Rad I don't think that's it. I'm pretty sure Satan makes a lot of the things we eat and drink. I do wonder if there's some toxicity issue even after curing, or if they...

Loctite plastic bonder epoxy. Mentions Delrin specifically, and in all my testing is an excellent epoxy for Delrin or acetal stems. http://www.loctiteproducts.com/p/13/7/epxy_plstc_s/overview/Loctite-Epoxy-Plastic-Bonder.htm Interesting, thanks, Kurt. Hi, Chris, I'm not home and don't have pictures, but if you think of a drawer pull, that flares to a rounded end, you'll have it. The length was made as short as possible without getting my fingertips in the way of the business end. Something like an engraving tool might be another good image. The r...
