Re: Homemade Alcohol lamp

To undermine my previous post, a 2 oz alcohol lamp can be had for $13 based on a 3 second google search. I'm all for improvised tools, but many times it's just as easy and almost as cheap to just buy what you need. As for which is better, I don't know that it really matters. I use a heat gun. Some ...

Re: Homemade Alcohol lamp

Ahh yes I agree, that is half the fun! To find new methods is a great thing! The lamp is a great extension of that, and you already have DA, so why not use it for that too! And Simeon reminded of two more methods, the oven/sand and boiling water methods. I just thought of a new one too. Go with me ...

Re: Homemade Alcohol lamp

Hey, a candle is very handy under certain circumstances. Another reason I wanted to give this "homemade" idea a whirl is because of what I beileve it was Bruce that said "half the fun of pipe making is making the tools needed" Which is true I suppose, but that, the lack of patien...

Re: Homemade Alcohol lamp

Thanks Nate! In hindsight it does make more sense, I just kept hearing and reading "alcohol lamp" so I never took the time to think about the heat gun. Reckon I know what's next on the list of things to get ;) I'll hopefully pick one up this weekend. If I was smarter, I woulda searched the...

Re: Homemade Alcohol lamp

Ok, I'll look into that :)

*edit* P.S.- do you prefer the using the heat gun as opposed to an alcohol lamp? I was just going by what Tim told me he believed worked. It does make sense since there's less risk involved.

Homemade Alcohol lamp

http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/ww338/Bibo1369/Mobile%20Uploads/AlcoholLamp.jpg Most say an alcohol lamp is the best way to bend stems, and I'll agree. Problem in my case, is my only alcohol lamp is a family heirloom, and my ol lady would kill me for using it. So, I devisedd my own. I used the t...

Re: Why Are Cobbs Great Pipe Material?

It means that when they test out how far a car will go on a tank of gas, the manufacturer usually finds a nice smooth downhill couple of miles to do the test on. Which explains why my Ranger was supposed to get 24 mpg and probably gets 13. "Your Mileage May Vary" Thank you! I've been wond...

Re: Wood Stems

Delrin doesn't adhere very well to wood, can't remember exactly what is recommended though. I think steel, maybe? Delrin will adhere pretty well to most acrylics.
I could be wrong, but I don't believe so.
No idea about the toxicity of stem woods

Re: Blasted Tomato (my first blast)

I've yet to finish my first yet, so I'm no help in deciding what to do really. My only suggestion would be to try a trading post on here? That's what I'd do, but I'm not exactly the best at figuring things like this out. Personally, if I had something to trade worth that pipe I'd offer it in a heart...

Re: Why Are Cobbs Great Pipe Material?

A lot of folks here give a rash of grief, usually in good fun. Sometimes interpreted as mean spirited, and if I've came across as such, I do sincerely apologize. I myself caught a lot of grief starting out here as well. The thing with corn cob pipes, is they don't tranfer taste from one tobacco to a...

Re: Why Are Cobbs Great Pipe Material?

Young Bruce, I'm sure there are plenty of hot pipe making chicks who would love to try your outhouse corncob, but I would suggest sanding to well beyond 10,000 grit afterward. For stain used motor oil will give you a nice shine and make it easier to get you outhouse corncob away from the hot pipe ma...

Mr. Wallenstein, I would have to cast my vote for all of em! Asking to pick between those pipes is a tough one, but if it has to be decided, the 3rd one has won me over hands down!

Brylon pipes, now see, THAT'S what ya need for makin a pipe! I heard it grows wild up in Sasquatch country, you holdin out Todd? Better yet, why don't you get hold of some of that mammoth horn, and see if you can trade it for some purpleheart, bet ya can make some purdy pipes outta that, lest you fo...
