Re: Compressor for sandblasting
I use the Harbor Freight 2.5hp 21 gallon unit. I also have a pressure pot. I blast at 90psi and get about a minute of blast time before the compressor kicks on. It usually takes me about 45 minutes to blast one of my pipes. If I was to go a bit craggier with the blast I turn the PSI up and it takes...

Too wide at the top but fixable. Follow Scottie's link to the KC pipe club contest and look at the example posted.

Re: VFD basics for shaping wheel motor
I am looking for motors in my surrounding area, and am not having any luck. I may opt for the Automation Direct motor and VFD. If i go that route, is there anything else that I need to by aside from wiring/plug in order to make the entire setup work? I see on their website that they recommend an AC...

Re: VFD basics for shaping wheel motor
I have two motors from Automation Direct along with their suggested drives. No problems with either. There are a lot of options in the programming of the drive. Once you figure it out it is simple to do. I'm sure their drive box would work with other brands of motors so long as the drive is matched ...

Re: Military Stem Ferrules
Doing it manually is somewhat of an art (a lost one at that). I believe it was the Brits that perfected it a long time ago for silverware. Pretty much all CNC these days. Comes in handy for really deep parts that would be horrendously expensive to tool up utilizing progressive stamping dies. Volume ...

Have you ever considered making your own by spinning them on the lathe? I would imagine Peterson's are stamped out of who knows what then nickel plated.Sasquatch wrote:I sure wish I could track down a hundred Peterson type nickel ones in various sizes.

Re: Bulk Briar Orders
Some time back I placed a small order directly with Mimmo. It was shipped via FedEx with no issues other than a few days after receipt I get a bill from FedEx for the customs fees. OUCH! I have enough briar now at my rate of usage to last me the rest of my days. I accumulated it thru Steve and by bu...

So uh... trying to bend this stem was definitely an adventure. Got it where I wanted finally just to realize after the fact that I'd bent it to the side as well. Used my standard kerosene lamp method and that was a real bad choice, turns out. Hopefully I'll get the scorch marks out when I finish di...

Re: Cheapest laser engraver?
Thanks Sandahlpipe. I will need to practice on stamping. I also may need to get a stamp with less on it. Maybe my initials Instead of my name till I get better at it. If you are not already doing so, try heating the stamp with a propane torch. Not to the point of turning red of course! You will nee...

Re: Help with sharpening spoon bit?
The term "spoon bit" is a misnomer as they are reamers. As with ANY reamer, the idea is to remove as much material as possible before reaming to final size. I drill first with them all the time because I'm partial to the chamber shapes in the selection I have. I step drill with 2 or 3 diff...

Re: PM-1030V Lathe or ?
Would this be a dumb@ss idea as a stand to hold the lathe? Looks like it will hold well over 1000 pounds and would provide tons of useful storage. Seems like vibration would be a potential issue, but I love the idea of being able to move it while my shop is a long ways from done yet. https://www.ha...

Re: Help with sharpening spoon bit?
I would suggest working on the flat with a fine file first so as to actually remove a little metal. Then, follow it up with the diamonds. If you indeed did get a dull one then you'll die an old man before you get the edge back with a diamond hone alone. I would clamp it in a vise and stroke away fro...

GI-GO: Garbage In, Garbage Out For those that do not know, CNC machines are programmed with universal G & M codes. There are several ways of compiling these codes. For the most part, these days the codes can be generated semi-automatically from CAD/CAM software (Computer Aided Drawing/ Computer...

I'll have to look it up. It's stuff I got from a pen blank supply. It's not actually acrylic, but some form of polymer/polyester something. Needless to say, I have that stuff set aside for whenever I feel like making pens again. 50 lashes with a wet noodle!! I state again from my previous dissertat...
