Re: Last Two for the Summer

Thank you , everyone. I appreciate the input. It is always nice to hear that you are taking steps in the right direction. Not so fast, NathanA, everyone has not spoken. In my opinion you should definitely keep working in this, "out of your comfort zone." Nothing easy comes good, uh, I mea...

Re: Tulip? and an Egg?

I could offer some minor critique of the first one...the bowl shank transition is a bit odd to me, the diameter change in the shank at the transition from the blasted area to the smooth area at end of the shank (especially noticeable in the top view). No problem at all with the second one, except I ...

Okay, Rad, you asked for it...Just (very carefully) read the article about Teddy Knudsen in the Fall 2011 edition of "Pipes And Tobaccos" magazine. I just got mine today. You got yours yet? 8)

Re: How much time do you spend on the stem?

You should know, Bruce, Rad, and all, I was just being polite, and trying to avoid an argument because I wasn't in the mood to tangle at the moment, (I was watching the doc on PBS about the two orphaned cheeta cubs) but all you guys are just glorified pipe manufacturing businesses, counting your tim...

Leave Mike alone! You're lucky he even performs for you bastards. Thanks, Sasquatch. It seems like your hostility for me and sarcasm have now taken you 180 degrees and, I'm sure, unintentionally, you're on my side. Thanks again. But seriously, Rad and JHowell, both, make arguments which make ...

Welcome Back, for sure. I checked your tweets on twitter when the forum went down. That was a good idea to post and let people know what was happening. Thanks, and sorry, there wasn't much any of us could do to help you out. The Hurricanes that went through here, 200 mi. inland, in 2003-2005 were th...

Re: How much time do you spend on the stem?

This is gonna blow some minds... I keep detailed notes with time spent on each detail of each pipe I make, still it's a little difficult to extract the time spent on a particular component, but as best I can tell, I spent about 18 hours making the stem on my "Tilted Pot" pipe, and the ove...

Bowl coatings? BOWL coatings? We donneed no steenking bowl coatings! True. I forgot to mention that. If the pipe looks good without a coating, you can skip it. I try to skip it whenever posible. "Real Pipemakers don't use bowl coatings." (not true, some of the greatest pipemakers ar...

Wow, that's something new, and very interesting. I like it.
Not to worry, but be careful about twisting the stem if it gets tight. The thin part of the shank looks very fragile. Hold the shank near the thick end if you have to twist a tight stem in or out.

Re: Bowl Coating Magic

The recipe I've seen here a lot is sour cream and buttermilk mixed 50-50, then add pharmaceutical charcoal capsules (dumped out) crushed to a fine powder and mixed in until you get a good opaque paint-like material (quantity?). Then you apply it with a tiny artists paint brush. But I don't use this....

About the flaw..depending on who is looking and other factors ...sometimes a flaw or an area of rough plateau can work to give a pipe an unusual and creative effect. ..sometimes it just looks like a flaw. I understand trying to stick to the original design idea, but when I hit a flaw or a bad sand p...

I have a question. Does it pass the test? "Are you able to pass a pipe cleaner all the way through from the bit to the bowl?" I've thought of that before...using a second, plugged, airway, angle to achieve an otherwise imposible shape. I've never made one, though. Great pipe. M.M.

Okay, I got a message from Boekweg, and he told me he had edited his original post and removed Tom Leedy's name, but I still don't think it's a big deal that he brought up the topic. This is a public forum. Granted, I might not like it if someone critiqued my pipes on a forum without my knowledge, b...

Re: unfinished pipes

Has anyone else seen these sites? pipe makers that seem to make what looks like unfinished pipes. I'm sorry, but i'm not that impressed by these pipes. They seem to resemble unfinished briar blocks with stems in them. They are selling these things form between $85.00 to $110.00 as far as i can see....

Maybe a bit hypocritical, coming from me, but you may have gone a little too far with the scuffy stem face and tenon (or not).
