Re: Dumbest question ever?

You wouldn't have any pipe chewed through it if you used Ultem!

Re: different grit, different staining results?

Well, if you believe your stain is not going to get absorbed, just wet the block and dry it with a hot gun.

Re: Shape first, drill later...

Leo, I've used Brads bits, and once you get them to the bottom, the chamber is as smooth as a baby's bottom. They are both as good and precise as is Brad. The problem is that people don't know what spoon bits work like when they're right , so they figure if they can get a hole in the pipe with them...

Re: Shape first, drill later...

Todd,

I still don't understand the part about Brad's bits. I have a set. I'm not a 600lb gorilla, yet I managed to drill a couple of pipes (and screw another pair.) However, it wasn't comfortable nor smooth, so I'm very interested: what are you saying?

Cheers,
Leo

How would you qualify this pipe? Straight or cross grain?

Re: Show me contrast stains

I don't think a pipe would "look" contrast-stained if it isn't. That J. Alan pipe that you labeled as possibly contrast stained, I say "aye." Now, this is what I call contrast: http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5135/5429120475_9ffc2cd102.jpg DSC_0097 But we all know Tom does some pre...

Re: steel?

Got a piece of briar on its way! I picked up a piece of rosewood to play with while I'm waiting for it to get here. Think I will start out with a more traditional look First, your metal work is absolutely stunning. Kudos. Second, all pipemakers will, eventually, make their pipes from raw material. ...

Re: 2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade

On the bright side, I have a half-done cavalier pipe that I would never thought of trying. On the bad side, I'm really ashamed of not having let you know guys that I wasn't going to make it - but I really thought I was going to make it. But you know, real life and all that. All in all, I'm really so...

Re: What did yer 1st pipes look like?

You guys are awesome. All artists began somewhere I guess and when a new guy like myself begins pipe carving it is easy to become demotivated by focusing too much on where you would like to be as an artist rather than allowing your own abilities and aesthetic to develop by just carving, then carvin...

This is mine.

I broke it once, but I repaired it. It's still my favorite, it smokes really well. The stem and ring was a gift from Alberto Bonfiglioli, the briar was not a gift from Mark Tinsky.

Not a fan of the stem - I would prefer a short ebonite one.

In any case, great work, as always.

Re: Perfect lathe for SAS

Funnily enough, I hate in no particular order: 1) Fixing the darn block to the lathe 2) Drilling the darn holes 3) Shaping the darn tenon 4) Fitting the darn tenon to the darn mortise 5) anything related to shaping and sanding stems. I think the only part I truly enjoy is the shaping of the stummel....
