Re: What is a Pipe Turd?
That's already looking much better! I think that Jeremiah's leading you in the right direction. Be sure to get the entire pipe as smooth as possible before you start hand sanding. It will make your final shape (and your life) much easier. Try to make the shank the same width as the stem where they m...

Umm....honey doesn't mold......chemistry I guess. Look, there are enough myths out there. Let's not add to it. M'kay? Well, it's not a myth that mold requires food (sugar) to grow. I had to look it up and you're right, honey doesn't mold. Mold will grow on just about anything given the right condit...

I ordered the 19mm parabolic spoon bit to try out. Once I receive it and test it I'll post my experience here.

Re: bowl coating discoloration
Other solutions spoil and attract unwanted pest. This is true but only if you use something that has sugar in it, like honey. As long as you use an organic base which contains no sugar, it shouldn't be possible for anything nasty to happen. Still not entirely true. I use a small amount of honey in ...

Re: spoon-bits.com
Also, the result shots at the end of the video do not look like clean holes to me. The dead-center of the bowl is missed, and there is beveling in the chamber, indicating the pipe was advanced at different angles in the course of drilling. I think that this is likely an issue with technique instead...

Based on the demo video on the website, they appear to cut very well. I contacted the maker to ask about sharpening and invited him to participate in the thread.
Here's the demo video from his site:

Re: Machined pipes.New Factory in Nashville.
Thanks for taking the time to write up the back story, Todd. I really enjoyed reading it. I'll admit, it took me a little while to feel positively about the venture. When I first read the website, it sounded to me like a declaration of war against hand made pipes. The more I thought about it, the mo...

From an article in the New Yorker: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/02/23/shape-things-come?currentPage=all Jobs’s taste for merciless criticism was notorious; [Jon] Ive recalled that, years ago, after seeing colleagues crushed, he protested. Jobs replied, “Why would you be vague?,” arguing t...

Re: You guys needing a camera...
I think I had a shinier penny with fewer nicks and scratches than George. Also, 1982 was the last year they made all copper pennies. The relief on 1983 pennies isn't as deep or pronounced as 1982 and older. George also has more dramatic lighting that shows shadows on the face of the penny. Now I wo...

. The more I participated, the more comfortable I became, and the more connected I felt. Now folks that I use to get all fluttery about speaking to I chat with casually as good friends who love pipes. What's funny to me is that this was always the case, I just had to be comfortable and confident en...

Re: This forum is a scary place
And maybe, again, this is more about me particularly than "most" of us here. I have an inferiority complex about my pipes, I never think they're good enough. But I think that's pretty common, isn't it? Very common. I think that everyone has pointed out true stuff about the intimidation fa...

Re: Triple Contrast Stain?
People mix stains all the time and will apply multiple coats of different colors to a single pipe.
Before you stain the pipe, prep a scrap piece to test it out. Do this until you're happy with the results.

Thanks for taking the time to share. That's a pretty nice first pipe. Keep bringing that kind of love to the other pipes you make.
