Re: PITH 2019!!!
PITH started as a way to help new carvers. Let's not over-complicate the process. Live edge has been chosen. I say make anything you want that has a live edge and let it be critiqued for what it is, even a Danish "Freehand". As is usually the case, probably half of the participants will dr...

Re: Buffing wheels
I have a Muslim wheel for Tripoli from Tim West, and a flannel for the fine, also from Tim West. He put together the best combination a while back and so far nobody has made anything better. Jeremiah, I have yet to encounter a "Muslim" wheel. I have numerous muslin buffing wheels but I'm ...

I get a severe case of the "puckers" watching these guys with long sleeves work around a lathe or any spinning power equipment.

2019 GKCPC carving contest
This should be interesting. GKCPC has announced the contest for 2019 will be "do your best work". In other words, no specified shape to follow, carver's choice.
10th anniversary of the contest.

Re: Wanting to make a few nice pipes as gifts
Welcome Joshua. There is an unbelievable wealth of information here so dig in. Like most bulletin board sites, I would politely advise you to search for an answer before posting a question. The chances that the question has already been answered are quite high. Already having lathe skills is a big p...

Re: 80 gram super-premium pipe, .250" non-reinforced tenon..
Is "acetal" Britspeak for Delrin? If so, that would explain not breaking. On a magnum-sized pipe, though? It's also quite flexible. Delrin was a DuPont trademark. It has pretty much become a generic term as there are now many different manufacturers since DuPont invented it in '53. Acetal...

Do you think the tenon was originally an integral part of the stem or a separate piece that was drilled then glued in?

Re: The more you think about it, the more your brain will hu
I got the owner's go ahead to give the broken-off tenon a slide hammer yank. (It's acrylic & super stuck) Since the direction of pull will be along the red line, and the (presumed) alignment of the mortise & tenon is the yellow arrow, this should be interesting. I'm not sayin' that 90% of t...

Are you going to attempt to rectify the issue or put it back together the way you got it?
If you are going to fix it be sure to post pics. Should be interesting.

Re: Juma?
It is an alternative to ivory. Not sure exactly what it is made of other than some minerals mixed in a mystery resin. It is not polyester. It is widely used in the joint and butt on pool cues.

I've been done with mine for a week or two now. I'm working on another, just because I wanted to try a more traditional take on the author. Probably won't finish that one, but regardless, I'm still on board. On a side note, I haven't been participating much in the thread this year (been busier than...

Possibly came from one of the old pipe factories or perhaps this gentleman made it himself. I've seen variations of it before.

I'm afraid I'm out also. My wife tripped on a curb not long ago and broke her hip. Not shattered thankfully. My time is spent with her physical rehab. Maybe next time.

Re: Replacement stem making A to Z (instructional video set
Okay so I'm going to bump this with a couple of questions: 1. Are these the discs I'm looking for: https://www.amazon.com/3M-RADIAL-BRISTLE-BRUSH-ASSORTMENT/dp/B00VZ3DW2E/ ? 2. As much as I want to get a proper sandblasting set up, the cost/space required makes it unfeasible at the present time - c...

Re: Another YouTube video set added: Replacing a broken teno
Another series I binge watched. Now I gotta get me a slide hammer! Also known in the auto-body trade as a slap hammer. My brother was a body man and I watched him use one many times for pulling out dents. I've also seen them used for pulling cores out of locks. And the one that makes me ...
