Re: Apple Nosewarmer

The proportions don't look like a nose warmer. Not that it's wrong, but It just looks like a well-proportioned brandy. I think the bowl isn't quite round enough for an apple. About a half inch shorter stem would make it look like a nose warmer. But it's a nice pipe. And I do like the crisp line betw...

Re: Chubby Apple

My wife says I can't do any more pipe trades this year. I've traded with about 5 others in the past few months and have one more left to trade. I'd be happy to critique a pipe and send it back to you, but there are many more qualified than I to do that. I don't know that I would say my development h...

Re: Chubby Apple

You are all far too kind. I can say that the bowl does not dip below the shank. That's the way the shadows play with the pipe sitting up slightly due to shank extension. The stem is relatively flat, but that's the way I like my stems. I think it's more comfortable that way. It appears flatter on the...

Re: Chubby Apple

Thank you for your kind words. I'm not sure if I will be able to make it to the show or if I will have a chance to make enough pipes to attend. Is it an option to send the contest pipe in by mail? If so, I'd love to enter if for no other reason than to get helpful criticism. Sent from my iPhone usin...

Chubby Apple

I've been relatively quiet on the forum, reading as much as I can until this point. With each pipe being an improvement over the last, I haven't felt ready to post anything for critique, because I've known where I made my errors. This pipe is something I'm currently very pleased with. I would like t...

Re: Petite Lumberman

Overall, a pretty good attempt! The lumberman is a pretty difficult shape to pull off. It looks like the crease behind the button needs to be sanded and buffed a bit more. This can be achieved by pressing sandpaper with your fingernails up to the button. Also, the button is a bit thick and appears t...

Re: Pipemakers, craftsmen? Artists? Engineers? Bodgers?

I've been thinking a lot about pipe making. So many skills go into it that it's fairly difficult to place it neatly in any one category. The design of a pipe includes at least basics of art in making lines that look good together. Engineering comes into play, woodworking is certainly part of it. Inl...

Re: Lundell poker, first hand made stem

Yes. The saddle should be closer to the shank and the flat part of the stem should be longer. You may also try widening out your slot a bit more towards the sides. That will make the smoke less concentrated in one area. Keep up the good work!

Re: Which Compressor to Buy

Thank you all! I decided to go with this one here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/BelAire-218V-80-Gallon-175-PSI-Vertical-Two-Stage-Air-Compressor-/310638000290?ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:US:3160 I figure 80 gallons is as big as anyone probably needs and should have no trouble keeping up with my 5cfm cabinet set...

Re: Which Compressor to Buy

Thank you, Sasquatch and Evan. I think I may end up going with the 80 Gallon Belaire. It's time to bite the bullet and not spend longer blasting a pipe than if I were to finish it smooth.

Re: Which Compressor to Buy

Thank you, Sasquatch. Good thing I asked before buying. Is there a particular advantage to a 2 stage compressor over a single stage? I'm pretty clueless. I figure anything is an improvement over what I've got, but I want to buy only once. The Harbor freight model is 2-stage 5HP. I've been happy with...

Which Compressor to Buy

I've been reading up on getting a nice sandblast. I recently bought the Cyclone e-100 cabinet and am happy with how the cabinet and gun perform, but my compressor is a 21 gallon unit from Harbor Freight. It performs ok, but I have to pause every minute or so for about 5 minutes to let it catch up. I...

I can say that this pipe not only looks cool, but smokes perfectly. Peter made a very thin stem on it that barely feels like it's in your mouth. :D

I just finished making a pipe with a briar stem. Does anyone know of a safe way to seal the briar on the stem to keep the moisture out of the briar?
