Re: What is a Pipe Turd?
I didn't know we were going to make a pipe . You have to face the stem and block, is this a kit ? Hmmm... let's say that I have a tenon turning tool, and I figured out how to use it. The shank face has not been faced off! But at this point, we are fixing this turd, not making a new one, so we shoul...

Re: What is a Pipe Turd?
Next take some material off the sides of the shank. When you look at the shank face, you want it to be round and cylindrical all the way to the bowl. The top of the bowl looks like it's higher on one side (the right side in the last picture). Bring the higher side down so it's symmetrical. Then ref...

Re: What is a Pipe Turd?
Ok, it's been a long hard week of working on this thing, but I got a new stem put on it, and I think I got it down to where Massis said it should be. Am I ready to sand now? If not, what should I work on next? http://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/11049485_10203911064844654_...

Re: What is a Pipe Turd?
Ok, so I am going to turn this turd into a half-decent pipe using the suggested critiques given here. Jeremiah said that I should throw the stem away, so that is done. I'll put a new stem on it and, as Massis suggested, I won't remove the stem until all the shaping and sanding is done. I will also s...

Re: What is a Pipe Turd?
I'm honestly wondering A) how hard it was for you to deliberately mess al this up in a way that would be realistic B) how much it pains you to do this, knowing you can do much better. A: I must admit, I did waste fifteen minutes of valuable shop time, a premold stem blank, and a less than mediocre ...

Re: What is a Pipe Turd?
PS: I feel like I'm reiterating the 10 commandments of pipemaking everyone here has been shouting at me and others for the past few years Yes, but they seem to be scattered all over the place. Very difficult for a new maker to compile. PS2: Walt, I'd love to see you tackle our tips on this one, tak...

Re: What is a Pipe Turd?
Red, that's funny as hell, but I'm sending you to "time-out" I made this pipe so that we wouldn't have to "ridicule" someone else's example by giving it our usual harsh critique. Let's take this opportunity to teach! Jeremiah, Massis, thanks for your input. Does anyone else...

Yes. Yes I did. Just this morning.Massis wrote:You actually made this didn't you?
Seriously though. Let's try to use this as a teaching tool. Say, a "one stop shop" for some basic pointers?

FWIW, I just ruined my buffing wheel on the pipe I just posted in the gallery. I hope it helps to clear some things up.

Re: What is a Pipe Turd?
Oh, a couple of questions I forgot to ask:
I would like to sell my pipes for about $100. Is this a fair price for this pipe?
If not, what is a fair price?
Should I sell it at all? (I could really use some money for more briar!)

What is a Pipe Turd?
Hi everybody. I'm new to pipemaking. I just made my first pipe, a backwoods billiard, and I am hooked! I would love to make pipes in my spare time and sell them for a little extra tobacco money, or maybe even turn it into a full time job some day. I showed my first pipe to a friend yesterday and he ...

Re: Machined pipes.New Factory in Nashville.
For being so independent, everyone seems to share a remarkably similar "aesthetic," style of grooming/dress, manner of speech, and promotional philosophy, bruh. Having professed such a strong desire to be separate from whomever they've deemed the "other," I find them to be a pec...

Re: Machined pipes.New Factory in Nashville.
the market seems to be littered with hastily wrought $400 pipe-turds of late. Sadly, it seems to take a maker a while before they can train their eye to the point that they recognize a pipe-turd when they see it. I know I made my share of turds back in the day, and didn't even realize I was doing so.

Re: PITH 2015
IMHO, the PITH should be a challenge, as it is supposed to be a learning experience. That said, I think the bamboo shanked sitter is an excellent idea, with the stipulation of no pokers! If it was easy, what would you learn? Now, having put in my two cents, I will say that I'm in on this round... ju...

if all you're going to be making with it is pipe socks it's pretty darn pricey. Wut...? I've made other things with it :D http://scontent-a-mia.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/12856_10203563586517913_2527465984549071534_n.jpg?oh=c24dc4dc066cb816fcf12f292a234178&oe=55247E21 http://fbcdn-sphot...

Re: Leather Pipe Bags and Leather Sewing Machines
I spent quite a bit of time pouring over the leatherworking forums when I decided I needed to make my own bags. The consensus was that you really need to get a walking-foot machine for leather work. More research cemented my decision to get the Consew 206RB-5. It's not cheap, but is considered by ma...
