Re: prince 9/2/18

Yeah, that's a really tough line to walk. I have found that if you shape it like normal and then make sure you blast evenly it shouldn't be a problem. When I blast a pencil shank I don't leave any extra meat at the bowl/shank junction. I just shape it like normal and then pay close attention while I...

Re: prince 9/2/18

I don't think it's the pictures and maybe I'm just getting hung up on the bowl/shank junction. Take a look at the bowl/shank junction on this prince of mine. The radius is a lot tighter than on yours so it gives the shank and stem a cleaner look. https://c647068.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com/products/002-786-...

Re: prince 9/2/18

From the profile view the shank taper is okay. It's from the top view that the shanks too straight. It would be more noticeable if your bowl/shank junction was tighter. Hope that made sense. The bowl height really is subjective. Most of the time my princes are 1.5" tall and 1.75" wide. The...

Re: prince 9/2/18

Your bowl/shank transitions need to be a bit tighter (smaller radius). The bowl could be a touch shorter to my eye. Stem/stummel ratio look good. Bowl symmetry looks good. The stem bend looks maybe, maybe, just a touch overbent. From the top view: the flare of the stem is off. This is super duper tr...

Re: prince 8/29/18

I'll add that the stem is over bent. Not a lot. But just enough that it throws the pipe off. Relax the bend just a tad and you'll have a whole new pipe.

Re: PITH 2018!!!!

Better late than never! Just a few more coats of oil and my pipe will be headed to Jeremy!

I also just noticed in the picture that the bottom line of the stem, from the shank through the bend, needs a bit more attention.

I just used hot glue today to hold a ring on a jamb chuck made from a maple dowel.

That's kinda what I was thinking too. I've been devising a way to modify my extra pen jaws with some wood chunks with v grooves cut into them. It'll either work or be an epic failure, lol

Re: Making a Military-Style Stem from a Molded Blank (video

I haven't made a military mount pre-form on the lathe, but I've turned tenons by chucking them on pin gauges after opening the airways. You have to have your tools sharp or the pressure will push the stem off the pin gauge. I've done that as well. I'm looking for how to chuck it as the tenon cutter...

Re: Making a Military-Style Stem from a Molded Blank (video

I can't comment on the video but you mention in Video 1 that it is difficult to chuck up pre-form stems in a lathe, you know what my response to that will be :D lol Does that make me a "lathe guru"? Not to derail the thread, but I want to talk to you about how you do that accurately and s...

Re: PITH 2018!!!!

I'm not done either, so don't feel too bad. I'm trying to work it into the lineup while I finish pipes for the NASPC show next week. I'm still hoping to get it blasted later today, but we'll see how it goes.
