Re: Quick Change Tool Post for wood lathe
I am not sure exactly what you are looking for. How do you propose to use a quick change tool post on a wood lathe?

Re: Churchwarden = wonderful education
I just recently had to turn down a customer twice. They were wanting a pipe made to a budget. Not a problem, I will do that if asked, assuming the budget is actually in my price range. Firstly they asked me to make a transparent stem. Not gonna happen on a budget pipe. I don't keep the material in s...

Re: Churchwarden = wonderful education
LOL you missed a certain fairly well known "internet sensation" carver post a terrible billiard on facebook, saying "Jeez I dunno what you guys think is so hard about these." only to be torn into teensy weensy pieces by Bill Shalosky. Ah, good times. Aww why do I always miss the...

Re: Churchwarden = wonderful education
Great work. You understand now why a lot of pipemakers (including me) don't make churchwardens.

In the close ups of the bowl, is that wax streaking or scratches in the wood? What sanding process did you use?

Well I learned something new, the tree you call a sycamore in the US is not the same tree we call a sycamore here in the UK.

Re: My Blog
That's because you didn't have the good stuff. Like every other kind of food or drink, the spectrum runs from excreable to devine. I had it about 6 times in the US, in different restaurants and homemade, they were all awful. I tried making it at home myself following several different recipes, agai...
Re: My Blog
Cornbread, awful stuff, the only thing I ate in the US that I didn't enjoy.

Some of us aren't so stupid as to live in a country where you have to worry about -35.
Double figures here today (Centigrade). We had a chilly week last week, it was -1 overnight.

That's a shame, where did you buy them? Any chance of finding a local pipemaker to help?

Was there no instruction from the person you bought the tools from? Ideally you would have someone who knows how to use them set them up for you.

Re: 920 spindle speeds & "machining a backplate for concentricity."
You need to check the material of the backplate. Cast iron is more common than steel and you will definitely want to use carbide then as it's tough stuff to machine.

Did you check the speed for carbide? Usually carbide tools are used at a much higher speed than HSS.

Re: E32 straight shank collet
I think that Todd Bannard advocates chucking the shaft of smaller chucks in a larger metal turning chuck, like what I think you are recommending above.(I am not all that familiar with lathes and lathe terminology). I turn square stock in 3 jaw chuck by grinding off the corners, using a live center ...

Re: E32 straight shank collet
The straight shank will be fine but you have to accept your accuracy is dictated by the 3jaw rather than the collet chuck. If you can clock it in you may find there is one position that is more accurate than others and if so mark it and use this. Otherwise if you do all your operations without remov...

Re: E32 straight shank collet
Ah ok, that's fair enough.
Depending on the size of course square stock fits well in a collet, I use mine all the time to turn square stock into round.

Re: E32 straight shank collet
Why can't you just turn the stock in the chuck? Why do you need, or think you need, a collet?
