Re: Recommendations for belt sander.
I've had a Rikon 1x30 belt / 5 inch disc. Sometimes Woodcraft or Rockler have sales where you can pick one up for less than $100. Mine's been going strong for over four years. No issues other than replacing a bearing last week, cost me all of two bucks. https://woodcraft-production-weblinc.netdna-ss...

Re: Best way to shine up a rusticated pipe?
Shellac. Slather it on and don't touch it until it dries. Also, if your rustication is super "toothy" you should knock down some of that with a brass brush, otherwise by the time you apply enough shellac to make it even remotely shiny, it will look like one of those dandelion encased in ac...

The width of the slot should be determined by the funnel and vice versa. There's no point in having a slot if there's no funnel (sssh, don't tell Savinelli).

Re: Jet Black Finish
Was that applied before you cut it up? Because if so, holy shit did that penetrate more than anything I've ever seen. That WOOD be amazing! No, I just found some scraps of dead pipes lying around and applied some year old steel wool vinaigrette to them. The results could be more uniform, but this w...

Re: Jet Black Finish
No need to add tannic acid. Try as they might, briar cutters just can't boil it all out of there. Just glop your rusty juices all over a chunk of briar and watch it turn black right before your eyes.

Shape with a 36 grit wheel and go straight to staining. Market it as your "proprietary rustication technique."

Re: Bent Dublin With My First Hand Made Acrylic Stem
Not at all bad for a first hand cut stem. The bite zone looks like it could be a bit thinner, it's slightly under bent, and the taper could stand to start closer to the shank. The bowl kind of evokes the image of a guy who is starting straight up at the sky, so much so that he is about to fall backw...

Re: my third pipe complete
Just go make more and forget that you are good at anything else, assume you are a baby learning to read, it will be much easier than assuming you're a good machinist therefore you need to do well in pipemaking right off the bat. Pretty much sums up my thoughts when reading this thread. The tool mar...

Re: Anybody got a lead on stem material that looks like bras
Doc: I considered casting and carving. Lots of work, and the way the rest of the pipe is constructed I'd still need to turn a regular tenon on the stem. Too much work for this lazy boy. The split and hollow is something I hadn't thought of though. Great idea. Jeremiah: I think this is the route I'm ...

Anybody got a lead on stem material that looks like brass?
So I'm doing this commission of a replica pipe from the movie The Hobbit. The "actual" pipe has this funky brass stem that matches the decorative brass rings on it. I made stem number one from Rhinoplastic and it snapped in three pieces when I bent it. Stem number two was made from acryles...

Re: Blind side shaping
I just recently made myself a French wheel and mounted the motor much lower than where the 36 grit wheel sits on my lathe. I've found that between looking down on the disc and bring able to hold the workpiece lower without the lathe bed getting in the way, I get a decent view of the blind side if I ...
