Re: Stem material preferences

I'll have to look it up. It's stuff I got from a pen blank supply. It's not actually acrylic, but some form of polymer/polyester something. Needless to say, I have that stuff set aside for whenever I feel like making pens again. 50 lashes with a wet noodle!! I state again from my previous dissertat...

Re: Stem material preferences

Some forms of acrylic are just plain not suited for stem material. I have one where the smoke passing through the stem is warm enough to make the stem bend. Hmmm, I cannot think of a "form of acrylic" that would come close to doing that. Unless, of course, you are burning coal! Anthracite...

Re: 2018 GKCPC contest pipe

In my small collection of artisan pipes, I have princes from Scottie, Sasquatch, Jason Thompson, and Joe Hinkle. I am somewhat hesitant about attempting to make something of this caliber, but at least I have some decent examples. :) :) DocAitch Step out there and go for it Doc. "Nothing ventur...

Re: Stem material preferences

Acrylic is a catchall for Poly(methyl methacrylate). Trade names are Plexiglas, Perspex, Acrylite, Lucite et al. It is basically all the same stuff. There are two basic forms, cast and extruded. Avoid extruded like the plague as it has very poor machining qualities. Polyester is a different animal a...

2018 GKCPC contest pipe

I note that the GKCPC has announced the theme shape for this year's carving contest: The Prince. Love that shape.

Re: Compressor maintenance

If you are not already doing so, switch over to a synthetic compressor oil. Lasts a hell of a lot longer than regular oil.
You can also get an automatic drain for the condensate.

I've got a Kalamazoo 1SM (42"). Expensive but worth it. American Made!
What you really want is a Burr King like George's. Second mortgage time.

Re: PITH 2018!!!!

In addition to the Lovat and Dublin I suggested earlier, I have a couple of more: a nose warmer in any style or a reverse calabash in any style. So here's your chance Seamonster, either a nose warmer author or a reverse calabash author  . ACTUALLY I was thinking of a reverse calabash lovat.......

Re: Pictures of rustication tools.

I don't have any end results to show, but, rustication with a standard nail tool followed by blasting can produce some interesting results. As always, the briar itself has a big say in what one winds up with.

Re: PITH 2018!!!!

I'm in. Business pressures are gone now so hopefully, I won't have to bail. My suggestion for a theme: Lovat, with two requirements. The briar portion of the shank must be a minimum of 3 inches (76mm) as measured from the rear of the bowl (side facing smoker  ) and the bit (stem) must be acryl...

Switching to a finer grit and repeat step one :)
You won't achieve a perfectly graduated finish with sanding. An airbrush is really the only way to get a perfectly faded stain with no sanding lines or unevenness.

Re: Laser engravers

A critical factor is the size and design of the logo and/or text that is to be applied (and where it will be applied). I have a rotary fixture with mine that allows the image to be wrapped with no distortion. Bottom of a poker: no problemo. Placement on the shank: problematic inre size. Fixturing re...
