Re: Machined pipes.New Factory in Nashville.

These are the only production pipes that have really impressed me, and the price point should be a game changer. If they can make money and meet the demand without driving themselves crazy in the process I think they're going to be very successful with this. If I were a younger person getting into t...

Re: What is the most surprising...

In terms of shapes: I never really liked bulldogs, but one of my sons counted them as his favorite shape, so I made him one. In the process I found them a great way to train my eye to see straight lines and graceful curves, as well as symmetry, while also training my hands to achieve them. Now I rea...

Re: anybody going to richmond this year

Wish I could be there, but can't make it due to work obligations. Especially sorry to miss what appears to be their last show, and it's looking like it would have been a beautiful drive through stunning fall colors too :(

Re: Interesting editorial by Mike Glukler

This has turned into a fantastic thread! Very thought provoking. I enjoyed reading your original article, Michael, and just enjoyed re-reading it. I think you take some pains to represent it as your opinion. I think your opinion is more than a little interesting. I'm very glad you jumped in here on ...

The table of also rans contained some beautiful pipes too, and many of those were made by regulars here as well...

Re: KC Show Pipe Making Supplies @smokershaven

Hey Scott, how do you prep sandpaper for use on your wheels? I'd been using Klingspor cloth backed sheets, which are great, and hold up much better than standard paper backed sheets. But it was a pain to cut them into circles, and then cut tabs around the perimeter so they wrapped around my wheels ...

Re: KC Show Pipe Making Supplies @smokershaven

That's great news! Looking forward to seeing all of Steve's stuff. And I need a pack of 400 grit J.Alan sanding disks if you have them. I bought two of his wheels, and the pack of 220 paper in Chicago but the 400 was not available yet. I hate prepping sandpaper for use on my wheels. His pre-cut ones...

Re: Brew day!

I was referring to oxygen you put into the beer before fermentation, not post-ferm oxidation. Did the instructions have you shake the fermenter to get some oxygen into solution? Yeast need some oxygen to properly reproduce, although it may not be a problem with dry yeast. When you use liquid yeast,...

Re: Brew day!

On your BIPA, what were your ferm temps, pitch rate, OG, and oxygenation like? With stronger beers especially, you need good oxygenation and a starter to get a good result from the yeast. Which strain was it? Too little oxygen, too little yeast, and too high a ferm temp can give you off-flavors. Th...

Re: Brew day!

Thanks, guys! Interesting! Now I'm starting to wonder if it's the yeast, and intentional. It's very drinkable. Yes, the off-flavor, if that's what I'm tasting would be phenolic. It was a Belgian yeast, but I didn't note which one it was. This is the Belgian IPA kit from Brewers Best. It is fully car...

Re: Brew day!

Help! Oh, my Belgian IPA is beer! Had one the other night a little ahead of schedule and it was very decent. Hoppier than I thought it would be, but it has a lot of late hops, including one addition right at the termination of the boil, and a dry hopping after transferring to the secondary. It's bo...

Re: Brew day!

Anyone else brew a lot of session beer? I've really gotten into that for my daily drinkers, and bigger Belgians and such for more special occasions. I've been thinking about doing just that! I drink a lot of Founder's All Day IPA, and love it! I've been checking out some clones and have seen some p...

Re: Blasting a bamboo.

This tip came from my visit with Adam Davidson. It's a temporary cap for the end of shank made from scarp of ebonite and a slice from a synthetic wine cork. Face the end of the ebonite, then glue on a slightly thicker and oversize slice of the cork then what you want to end up with with something li...

This is all dangerously interesting. I need another hobby like I need a hole in the head. I think there is a brew store here in OKC, hmmm... Do it, Tyler! I'm having a blast with it! Hey guys (and Scottie too, if not especially her), Tyler's won't be ready in time, but any of us that have something...

Re: Holly tree wood for a pipe?

I've used white holly as stem accents and shank end caps. It can be nice for those limited applications, but it's not real strong, and is easily discolored by buffing compounds, or just about anything else, so it takes careful handling. If done well it can look very similar to ivory. Even for those ...
