Steam over tightened

Hi
Question just bought a pipe at a small antique store and the steam screws on a threaded piece. It has been over tightened in the past because it doesn't line up when turned till not loose is there anything I can do to fix this problem

Howdy,
Often there is some shrinkage in old stems etc. that causes the threaded ones not to line up anymore. The easiest way to deal with the problem is probably to fashion a thin spacer to go between the stem and the shank. The spacer will take up the room left by the shrinkage. Even a sliver of paper between the stem and the shank of the stummel will work if you only want a quick and dirty fix.

I use spacers to correct the problem as described with success.
