Slot hole cutting

Post by robert »

Does anyone else have a hard time cutting the slot on the stem bit?

Any ideas on how to do this an easy way?

HELP!!

Ah Ha! A topic I clearly need to cover in the Pipe Making section.

This is indeed tricky, perhaps to the point of being the hardest thing to do well on a hand cut stem.

I'll write up my method in the pipe making section, and post back here when I'm done.

Good question.

Thanks Tyler. I was working on one of these yesterday while thinking there had to be a better way. I look forward to your description!

Likewise. Perhaps the method can be adapted to modify preformed stems. At least until I purchase a lathe that is.

Random, I was using a Dremel high speed cutter #199. It just didn't give as clean a cut as I would like so I'm going to have to go to work on it with my tiny jewler's files to get things to look right. Here is a link to the cutter on Lowes website.

I will try your method next time I attempt this task. Thanks!

Well, I don't know if it is clear or thorough enough, but here it is:

How to cut the slit

Let me know if it is helpful.

Hmm, for some reason the link you gave, Tyler, ended up with an error on your site. I'll try again later.

Try accessing the "cutting the slit" instructions on this site by following the links in the pipe making section instead of the link posted by Tyler in his post. That solved the error problem for me.

So, Tyler, you cut the slit about 1" deep into the stem? I'm assuming that this taper does provide quite an open draw. I've personally never seen one that is this deep into the stem, but it is certainly worth trying. Thanks for the idea, it will be employed in the construction of my next pipe!

or so...

I probably need to clarify that slit will be a V shape. 1" from the bit the hole drilled through the rod will be untouched, and gradually from there taper open until the slit is about 3/8" wide at the bit.

That's what I thought you were saying. I will definately give it a shot. It sounds like a great idea that will improve the smokeability of my pipes.
