I'm confused. What is the other side of the coin that we've discussed in here? Is anyone saying that an open airway is a bad thing?

Ah ha! Now I understand what you are saying. Indeed, it is a mystery why many pre-formed stems aren't made with an open draw. I guess the reasoning is that those that want an open draw can open a tight stem, but those that want a tighter draw cannot close an open stem. Therefore make it tight and all have the potential to be happy.

I have been surprised by some of the pre-formed stems I have though. They are surprisingly well opened. Most, however, are not.
