While I've never worked bone, antler, or ivory, I regularly use a Dremel on my dog's nails. No sharp edges and less panic than with nail clippers. I'd guess the odor is very similar.

Bo Nordh. He is the most famous "Nautilus" style pipe maker in the world. Skinny bloke, but brilliant.
