Picture Request - Button Close-ups

Post by frazeeg »

Hi guys,

I'm working on the button for a hand-cut stem and am having problems getting it to look attractive. Would anyone mind taking some close-ups of a button from a few different angles and posting them?

These sure are a pain in the ass.

Right, but just from looking, none of these have close-ups on the button. They all seem to be just overall pics of pipes.

I'm looking for more like this pic Nate posted in the Gallery:

But from different angles than just the mouth-side. I'm having the most trouble on the back side of the button.

Sas said he was going to post a Step by Step button making tutorial next time he cut a stem. I'm sure it will include some awesome closeups...when he posts it.

I agree with you, I've come across a few pics like Nate's that have really helped me see what it should look like. This site has some great details on what a proper stem should look like and some "decent" close ups of the buttons. It even has a green stem Rad made. His ebonite must have gone bad on him  It smells so bad I wouldn't be surprised if it turned green after a good long while...

But I digress. Here's the link: http://www.fumeursdepipe.net/arttuyauxroan.htm

I hope this helps some.

I'm gonna do a "one way to cut a dead ordinary button" as soon as I can.

for now, here's a Sasquatch to the left of a Wiley

and a sidey sorta shot...

I like a fairly prominent button on a full bent pipe, with a lot of slope on the backside. Some like taller, some like less, blah blah blah. I think a tiny straight pipe can have a totally different button than a huge bent.

There's no single "right way" to do this. You want something that teeth can grab, and something that won't cut the user's tongue. Inside of those variables, there's lots of nice buttons and slots.

Nope that's a Wiley, off my "44" grade. It's huge. The button is nice, but because the stem is drilled right through at 1/8" or so, the thing is terribly thick. Makes for good smoking and bad clenching.
