Delrin Stem?

Post by lazyMlazyK »

Hi all! I'm new here, but I was wondering what you all think about using delrin to make stems? Would it affect the taste at all or be toxic in any way? I haven't found a US supplier for ebonite or vulcanite yet, and would like to avoid acrylic stems as this point in my pipe making hobby. Thanks for the help!

Delrin is funny stuff. You'll have a hard time cutting, filing and finishing it as you might acrylic or ebonite.

If you want ebonite or stem blanks, pipemakers.org is a sure bet.

Thanks Sasquatch. I made up a delrin stem, but I drilled the draught hole too large and had to leave the rest of the stem fairly thick and bulky. Got the pipe pretty much finished, but it sure isn't anything pretty  Sure isn't what I pictured in my head anyway. Is ebonite rod really that much more expensive than delrin rods?

think 50 bucks for a half meter, or 10 bucks a pipe.

Vulcanite blanks are about a buck each, acrylic about 3.
