Briar Stems

Post by caskwith »

I have been meaning to try making an all briar pipe for ages and I finally got around to drilling up a stem blank to do that. Havn't started on the pipe it will fit yet as I can't decide whether to make a pipe with dual stems etc and that will probably affect my final choice to design.

Anywa the question I wanted to ask is have any of you made a briar stem and before I start cutting is there anything I should watch out for?

Chris,
I'm so pleased that this is in writing and not verbal. Recently, while smoking my all briar pipe, a briar splinter lodged in my tongue and caused it to swell. Just today I can nearly sputter a few words.
What you need to look out for are splinters and pits.
Don't ask Rod Davies, he'll come out with some smart ass reply.

Well I made the stem, pretty much just treated it like any other stem and here are the results.

Chris, if you weren't a limey bastard from the UK, I'd think you were pretty great.

Chris,

That's a great looking pipe.

Now, for your next one you need to get the grain to match.

Beautiful work! You have to find a long piece of briar, next time, in order to much the grain perfectly.
