Metal Spigot

Post by taharris »

I have a customer who wants a pipe with an Aluminum spigot type stem connection similar to this pipe:
http://www.alpascia.com/detail.asp?x=&detail=19776.2

Can anyone offer advice as to where to obtain the spigot parts and how best to put one together?

Thanks,

Todd

Pipe Maker's Emporium has what you need:

It looks like they are silver instead of aluminum though.

So that gives me the outside, but what about the tapered metal clad tenon?

I think if you scroll towards the bottom of the page, the metal clad tenon is called:

#FB10
Silver Plated ( Long cap band )
$9.55 each
Inside Outer
12mm 20.3mm

Hello, I'm #1312.
That's a really big number.

Ahh, I thought that was just an extra long band.

Thank you.

So, to use a system like this do I need to drill a tapered hole in the stemmel or a straight hole?

I haven't the foggiest notion, actually. I only recalled seeing them there, I've never actually used them. Give Carolyn a call. She should be able to tell you what's up.

I think you'll need to taper both the tenon and the mortise, a la military mount. I don't know that for a fact, I just thought that was the point?

Why not just do a faux spigot tenon. Do a standard tenon but add the metal to give the appearance of a metal spigot.

But those store-bought tenon "covers" look already tapered. Maybe you guys know something I don't. If you do, please share it. Maybe it'll be so awesome I poop my pants. That doesn't happen nearly enough.

Incorporate the taper, up or down, in the stem shape. And the smaller sleeves, like the 7mm ones, have no or hardly any taper at all.

It won't really be a spigot tenon but will look like one when assembled. Do like Sas says by adding the silver or nickel cap on the end of the shank then add a silver or nickel band on the end of the stem but cut a normal tenon or use delrin.

So don't buy the already-tapered tenon caps -- since they are already tapered -- but just find a cylindrical ring that will fit the tenon?

I guess I don't need to understand...it's not my project.
