Interesting but worrying video.

Post by caskwith »

Interesting stem and techniques shown for some here but I am VERY worried by how much the lathe is moving about, that doesn't look like a small machine and I would not want to be using it while it wobbles around that much!

Actually I wasn't fully paying attention before posting, there are a few techniques and tools you might want to avoid.

Couldn't finish it. Between the spring-mounted lathe and work being chucked crooked, my Inner Toolgeek started screeching, "Close your eyes! Get away from that!", so I clicked away to shut it up.

In short, it was the polar opposite of watching yours, Chris.

The lathe moving around actually made me motion sick after a b out 2 minutes. I had to shut it off too.

Holy shit...
That's just plain stupid. One day that shitty table he's got the lathe monunted on will fall apart, probably seriously damaging the lathe and maybe taking his hand with it... And even if it doesn't that kind of vibration and floating around will slowly damage the lathe anyway.
And holding the drill bit with your fingers? How does that help anything? Unless he has one hell of a grip, in that case he could just hold the drill with his hand, no need for the tailstock...
Showing videos of stupid methods is much worse than just using stupid methods.

I commented on that video advising him to get it bolted down.

Whoa. Lots of lathe movement there.

I think this scene was in one of those safety videos someone posted a while back. Loss of hand via lathe... ew.

Actually what you saw was a gimballed lathe, you see his shop is on a ship so when the ship rocks the lathe stays steady and level it's the only sensible explanation. Cause if it's not it's just plain stupid. :)

How completely strange, and dangerous! Of course, I guess that as all parts of the lathe are fixed and moving at the same time, in the same way it will drill straight, but still weird and, as noted, almost makes you cringe!

Even that would only make sense if it was a gimballed pipemaker aswell...

That looks EXACTLY like the pipe you would make with that lathe.
