2nd Pipe Suggestions

Post by Mtlayne »

I finished my first briar kit pipe the other day. The first one i had no plan. I just jumped right on in so i could get my hands dirty and try to just learn from doing and from some reading or advise from other people. It was a freestyle pipe I guess is wha t I would call it. Do any of you have suggestions as to a what i can do with this block of briar? Style? Sorry I can't figure out how to post pics. But here is a link to the folder that the pics are in.

Thanks,
Miles

I would suggest making a classic shape, such as a billiard. Whatever you choose to make, however, see the shape in your mind's eye exactly how you want it. Sketching it out beforehand will help. And then execute exactly that shape. If you think you're going to make a billiard and then decide halfway through that you want it to be a dublin, it's very likely going to show in the final product. When you're done, post pictures of the pipe for critique.

I really like the texture at the top of the wood. Is there anyway to incorporate it in, or is this block just not made for that?

My $.02, if you want to keep the skin on top, my mind jumps to a Dublin. Main reason I say that is because that particular stem will not go well with something too freehandish, and a Dublin will be wide enough at the top to showcase the plateau.

It will be very tall if i do keep the plateau. Will that be a problem? And the stem is really fat lol I have sorta drawn out to what i think a dublin should look like, but im not artsy and can barely sign my name so I think im just gonna have to go by feel and hands on. Any suggestions for someone that really can't draw out a design?

Just be aware of how close the chin is to the chamber. That looks like it might end up being pretty thin if the chamber bottom is rounded vs tapered.

The shape you drew will be improved by canting the bowl forward just a few degrees. Then make a radius between the bowl and shank instead of a sharp angle.

Between shank and stem on the top of the shank, you've got a really sharp angle in your sketch. Instead of that sharp angle, round the corner a little bit.

There's still plenty of material there to make a dublin.
