What happens when fraised-stummel-finishers try to...

Post by LatakiaLover »

...shape a pipe by hand from a block.

Some years ago, as a response to the Danish Freehand Invasion that was occurring at the time, Dunhill came out with a "Collector" series of hand-shaped pipes. I don't know how many were produced, but I've seen a couple dozen over the years. All were spectacularly horrible.

Useful to think upon whenever you might get frustrated. These guys were factory pros, experienced with the materials and tools, and were not being smartasses or trying to punk anyone. In short, what you guys are doing is hard.

George,

April Fool's was 3 days ago. This is spectacularly horrible shaping.

Wow! I can't believe that one passed quality control. That's horrible.

That must have been back in the good old days when 'anything goes'. I will bet the inspector held his nose when he passed that one.
There was some pretty bad stuff on the market then, and I made some of it. When a piece I made back in the 70s turns up at the pipe club, I sometime wince.

And even tho it is a disaster there are those out there that will pay thru the nose to own one and proudly say they own a "Dunny Turd".
