New member and my first ever pipe

Post by hollywood »

Hi everyone. I just began carving last month and am already totally ate up with this hobby. I have so much to learn and a long way to get there, but all of the information I have been able to find here has helped tremendously so far.

This pipe was made from a pre-drilled ebachon kit with a bent stem that I found on ebay. It's not an ideal piece of wood, but I think it turned out ok. I hand carved the briar and trim cut the stem to match. I have not set up much of a shop area yet, so all was done with a coping saw, rasps, and sandpaper. I've since added a Dremel, and am setting up a buffing station this weekend for a better finishing process.

Any feedback would be more than welcomed.

Hi Dave,

I would say that you have some, uh, talent for making pipes. :D

For a first ever pipe, that is pretty incredible.

Thank you guys!! I appreciate that!

I guess I'm my worst critic. I really need to get this buffing set-up done. I am having a really hard time finishing the stems and pipe with compounds and wax. The buffing tools with the Dremel are less than ideal.

Wow, Dave, very nicely done! It's beautifully shaped overall, and I really like the way you handled the lines along shank and stem, and it flows into the bowl nicely too. Very surprising to see something this nice in an early effort, let alone a first pipe! I'm really looking forward to seeing more from you.
...and am already totally ate up with this hobby.
Oh yes, I can certainly relate to that! It becomes something of an obsession for many of us!

That is really good work, hope to see more. Guys that are their own worst critic typically tend to be perfectionists, which can be a good thing for a pipe maker.
