Wizard II

Post by meathod »

Okay, so last time I got some flak for not sanding my pipe totally smooth... So, just for you guys, this time I made sure there were no scratches, haha. Wood is Apple, with an African blackwood bowl insert.

Well done! I love your inlays, very organic. The way you incorporated the checked knot is gorgeous.

Typically this kind of pipe doesnt catch my eye, but this one has class.
Curious what you used to burn the cane stem ? I've used a Bic, but it takes just the right touch to keep from burning the outer layers.

thanks guys! The checked knot was actually just a really nice surprise, the outside bark of my starting block is so gnarled that It's hard to tell what the inside will look like...so it's always nice to have something work out for you...

I use a propane torch to burn the bamboo. There is a very slim window, like you said, before you burn it so much that it gets charred. I just go very slow. I find if you soak it in hot water for a while, it becomes more forgiving. Also drill out the knuckles before you burn it, for some reason this helps. A clean burning steady flame is pretty much essential as well.

I really like this one. Were I a smoker of that type, I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat. :)
