I use 100% carnauba wax. I know two suppliers here in Europe:

Germany - Hermann von Appen. This one in particular, I can testify about the his wax quality.
100g - € 5,0

Denmark - P.E. Herman
30g - USD 6,25/220g - USD 23,85

Ouch, that's expensive. Down here (Chile) one kilo cost me less than 10 bucks (I don't think I'll end up using all of it during my lifetime, thought...)

I have a 1/2-pound block of carnuba that I bought at Woodcraft three or four years ago, and it will probably last another 5-6 years. I seem to recall thinking it was expensive when I bought it, so it probably cost me ten dollars.

I've never tried Renaissance Wax on pipes. I wonder how that would work - or if it would.

it is great on other wood items, which is why i thought it would be great on pipes....but to be honest, i am fine with anything tried and true :) i am mostly wanting non -less- toxic things.

I've only ever use ren-wax on metals and handles of wood where I expected it to wear off in a fairly uniform manner. I guess it just never occurred to me to use it on a pipe. Hmm.

Ren-wax has solvents like acetone in it, which will strip the stain right out of a pipe stained with leather dye. Ask me how I know... On the other hand, it will show all the fills in Peterson stummels with a single wipe!

It also will not buff to a shine. Satin finish only. Plus it smells like acetone for weeks.

im not sure....i know acetone evaporates without residue, so thats safe once it dries....but i am honestly not sure about what is left in the wax that could be harmful....i have only used in it decoration, nothing meant for smoking/eating etc....

Dunno about possible toxicity, but I'd bet once the solvents have evaporated it's pretty inert stuff. The problem I have with it on pipes is that lack of shine, not to mention the dye-stripping. Oh, and it doesn't stand up to heat like carnauba, either. Face it, it's a soft wax that is formulated specifically NOT to harden. That's what it's for, it's museum conservators' wax for use on metals so they don't corrode. It's not meant to seal or put a shine on anything. It's not a finishing wax. I don't even use it on blades anymore, it wipes off too easily.

But it sure smells good for a while... :endofmankind:

It gives a sort of satin sheen, but it doesn't last very long. And it's a pain the butt to apply.

Kada, here's a whole list of suppliers for pipemaking stuff including Carnauba Wax: http://pipedia.org/index.php?title=Pipe ... d_Supplies

ellijaypipemaker, at the risk of being proven wrong, I would estimate that approximately 100% of pipemakers would recommend Carnauba Wax as a final finish on pipes.

Frank.
