New here, question on 'baccy

Post by J.McKnight »

So I am new around here, I am trying to scrape together the funds to start making some pipes of my own, but I bought a nice little pipe a few months ago and being a cigar smoker I picked up a tin of Davidoff Flake Medallions at the local tobacco shop(they're selection was horrible). My thing is I really like it. I have seen that some people don't like flake, but it hasn't bothered me a lick and it's a great smoke in my opinion. I have looked at getting Purple Cow and Habana Daydreams by C&D but does anyone have an recommendations? I don't really want to have to buy 20 tins and keep trying different kinds, but I may just have to huh? I guess I would like to find something I can buy in bulk and cellar some and smoke some.

Thank you kindly all

If you're looking for some stouter blends, you might want to try some by Samuel Gawith. They make some stuff that will make your hair straighten (unless your hair is already straight, in which case it will curl involuntarily). A really good place to go for raw information on tobacco is www.tobaccoreviews.com. Best compendium of tobacco info on the web. Good luck.

I'll just warn you that cigar leaf in blends do not make pipes taste like cigars. I moved from cigars to pipes and that was a big disappointment. Those blends are worth a try, but don't expect to get a nice Maduro flavor out of a pipe. Conversely, don't expect to get a good Virginia flavour from a cigar. Unusual stuff this tobacco.

I know on YouTube a lot of people coming over to pipes from cigars like Billy Budd by C&D.

And there's also a few pipe tobacco samplers for cigar converts.

These samples come with cigars also. I guess in theory you can match cigars you've liked to pipe tobaccos to try.

As a wise man once said, hope that helps.

Thanks all!

Ya I am not necessarily looking for cigar in my pipe, but trying to move over and find what I like and not be too drastic.. or maybe I need to just make the jump with both feet. Like I said I do really enjoy this Davidoff Flake but it is all I have had. I am not a newb to smoking tobacco just new to pipes and it is already a whole different world to me, but I love it and haven't touched anything in my humidor since. Maybe I should grab one to see the difference, but just trying to see what people who actually smoke pipes like and recommend :)

I'd say samplers are the way to go, especially with aromatics because they don't keep for very long.

Personally I'd recommend From Morton on the Bayou and Butera's Latakia #2. Boswell has a lot of good aromatics.
