I've seen it done convincingly well only once, by a German guy at the past Chicago show. He had a full table of driftwood-looking pieces. Not "crafty" looking ones, either, but serious master-grade workmanship and design.

His son was the meeter/greeter since carver dad didn't speak English, and other than the process taking 10 years of experimentation to develop, I wasn't able to learn much.

The impression I came away with---and that's all it was---is acid immersion/application is involved somehow.

Walle calls it driftwood, I call it my Brentwood finish!
This particular piece is done with strawberry burl.

George, you're speaking of Roger Wallenstein "Walle" and he speaks perfect English. Walle does that when he doesn't want to answer any questions! Steffen Mueller does the same finish. It's a proprietary finish that I have been privileged to have been told the process.

Yeah both those fuckers speak perfect English, although what comes out of Wallenstein's mouth pretty often is unbelievable anyhow.

I don't think this pipe in strawberry wood is driftwood.
Driftwood Wallenstein has a very gray patina.
if acid is used, I understand that the wood looks old and worm, but at least there are no worms or termites in!

Not just gray... Many different shades and colors are used... Driftwood is the finish not the color ... Several guys have done it.. And know how to do it.... Including yours truly

beat it up w/ a rough rasp, forget it on the beach for month, retrieve it, and finish as desired. heh
