Triple Contrast Stain?

Post by anthonyrosenthal74 »

I'm just curious. I understand the concept of contrast staining. At least I think I do.... Stain with a dark color, sand, and stain with a lighter color and so on. But how about a triple contrast stain? I've only recently completed my first pipe, so I have a lot to learn. But I'm thinking of trying something different on my next pipe. I was thinking of staining black, and then a dark blue, followed by a light green. Or would it be better just to use the two colors, dark blue and light green?

Regardless of color then, what would be a good way to go about achieving that? Would be as simple as just moving from darker colors to lighter to highlight the grain? Or would the second and third colors just cancel one of the others out?

People mix stains all the time and will apply multiple coats of different colors to a single pipe.

Before you stain the pipe, prep a scrap piece to test it out. Do this until you're happy with the results.

I'm going to give it a try and see what happens. I will of course try it on a piece of scrap first. If I don't like it, I won't do it on a pipe. Thanks everyone.

This dude does a triple contrast stain on a bowl (like a dish, not a pipe bowl).

"Whoops" ?

I actually love some "different" colours every now and then if they're not too plastic looking...
That blue/green/yellow bowl for example is just over the top, but awesome nonetheless!

I use as many as 5 stain colors for one finish. There's no limit really.

Sometimes I make adjustments with orange, red, and yellow until I get the look I'm after. I actually enjoy it and it's why I use powdered dyes. Using mulitple colors also can create a depth that one or two cannot.

OK... OK... So I wake up cranky and stay that way all day, every day.

Happy now, Mr. I-love-reminding-people-that-I'm-a-mellow-fucking-Canadian?

I heard Todd almost raise his voice one time. I swear I nearly called the national guard. I would've called the police, but I don't think they've probably had proper training to deal with an angry Canadian. He most likely would have eaten them.
