Rustication

I am about to try rustication for the first time and have been looking at examples online. Are there any rules on whether or not to do the rim or is it just preference? I know this forum holds to a higher level of standards so I wanted to make sure. Once I post pictures of it for critique I didn't want the first comment to be something like, "never do the rim."

Depending on your rustication method, bits of tobacco could fall in the cracks of rustication. I don't rusticate, but when I sandblast, I tend to make the rim, or at least part of the rim smooth to make it easier to keep the tobacco contained. It's not wrong to do it, just something to think about how it will be used and how it will look after years of use.
