No, but I'm intrigued. I think I'll let Tyler try it first though.

Just so all of you know, something perked my memory on this. Potassium chlorate is dangerous stuff. Unless you are really comfortable with dangerous chemicals and have some training with the raw chemicals used in explosives, I wouldn't advise using this recipie. Both recipies call for it.

Be safe.

I think that's why Tom Eltang had to get a license/permit to be able to use it.

I have not used it, but I am familiar with it. The second recipe there is an age-old recipe for black stain, not just for lab tables, but for any wood that you want to make jet black and resistant to abrasion and chemicals. Tom Eltang, as near as I can figure, uses this in his golden contrast finish based on a thread here on the board from a few years ago.

All of the ingredients in the second recipe are available in the US without a hazmat license of any kind. Just do be careful though, potassium chlorate is a powerful oxidizer:

I think most pipe makers that have been on this board for a few years know of the recipe and most of the procedure. A couple have actually been taught it by Eltang himself, I think. I don't know that it's a trade secret, but I would look askance at someone who was doing it and passing it off as their own.

And note that, while I said you don't need a license to get those chemicals inside the US, it can be an extreme hassle to get them since shipping to a residential address is forbidden under federal transport regulations - shipping to a business is fine, however.

well my employer has a pool cleaner, and and abatement company, we are both licensed and certificated...

hmmmmm

So how do the ethics work in pipe making? I am an artist. I do abstract minimalist work. I have been influenced by my mentors, by Rothko and by Antoni Tapies greatly. The work that I do uses techniques I have learned from all of these people, but the work is my own. Using that finish, though clearly an Eltang Finish, in the midst of a different style, with a different aesthetic and a different philosophy would be... stealing? Picasso said of course, "good artists borrow, great artists steal"

The pipe world seems a bit different as you have issues of function that dictate form to some extent, and therefore there are going to be some similarities already.

interesting

But... I know I know... make 12 perfect billiards and then you can worry about your style

It's fine to use it. There are other pipe makers who do. You'll just want to put your own twist on it, otherwise it looks like you are copying Tom. It's certainly no big deal to experiment with it, you know, other than the it-can-kill-you part. :D

So could this black dye be my answer for the elusive dress finish on a pipe?

I copy Tom with every pipe I make, and no one's called me out on it. :endofmankind:

It absolutely is! Be sure to use gloss, not primer.
