Is it OK to wax then shellac?

Post by buistd »

Hi there - I'm just finishing up a rusticated pipe. I waxed it with carnauba, but unsurprisingly the wax didn't make it into the deeper bits of the rustication so the finish is matte in places. Would it be OK to apply shellac on top of the wax so I can get an even shine?

Possibly can work, but if you just go heavy with the wax on the wheel so it cakes up on the briar, you can then take a heat gun to it and the wax will melt into the small crevices. It is definitely better to put the shellac finish first then wax.

first remove the wax with mineral spirits, you can use a brush to make sure you get in as far as you can. Then Shellac the whole pipe. Shellac will not work well on top of wax

well I suppose if one were to smoke to excess it would be a sin

"but what would be smoking to excess?"

Why smoking two pipes at once of course

There is no need for wax if you are using shellac. The wax may cause the shellac to come off easily. Picture waxing a car and then clear coating it. Not good.

I didn't intend to shellac it originally. Thought the carnauba would do alright on its own.

right, but getting the carnuba deep into rustication is near impossible. So like I said, take it off with mineral spirits and then shellac it.
