Small Sandblaster ideal for pipes

Post by AlfaDog »

For you guys that have access to an air compressor but no sandblasting equipment, here is a nice, inexpensive answer to your problem. It holds one quart of sand. I used them in the body shop and for small projects they are hard to beat. A small compressor will work fine.

Chris is right. I've been using a friend's 30 gal compressor and blasting cabinet and it takes me hours to blast most pipes. Another friend makes knives and he does a blasted finish on blades in minutes. Blasting briar isn't like most blasting applications.

I blasted a pipe with a mini blaster.....took about 3 hours and still was just enough to feel a little texture on the pipe. I'll be finding a system to borrow next time.
Am I Calamity Jane or Annie Oakley??...depends on the day.

I did learn two things. Need a bigger blaster and newbies should be seen and not heard. Thank you for the lessons.

Newbies are welcome and wanted. Much better to say something, get feedback and maybe be wrong than to not say anything at all and we all potentially miss out. Your thread has possibly saved some others time hassle and expense so do not feel bad. My apologies if the message came out as a bit harsh, I was browing the forums while watching TV. Keep asking questions, discussion and learning is what this forum is all about.

Chris-
You're answer didn't sound harsh it just sounded like you knew what you were talking about. If something won't work I don't need a long, drawn out answer why. I appreciate the response.

Yep! "Thanks" AlfaDog......I probably would have gone there too if it wasn't for your post!

EDIT: Like the drill press I bought...It said it was a 10" drill press...and I figured that's "great", I won't ever need to drill anything over 10". I was in for a surprise when it only drills about 3". My friend often tells me, "Ignorance can be fixed, but stupid is forever! HaHaHa!

Is the 3" the space under the drill bit or the amount of travel in the spindle?

3" = the amount of drill travels....

I suppose the 10" is how far the platform can be cranked up and down. I can still drill with it, drilled about 20 pipes on it so far, but I have to reset things to sometimes finish one hole and had to cut my drills shorter to use the platform at all. I have a stack of different sized books I use when the platform won't work. I just wasn't wasn't very smart when I bought it and didn't know about this forum. Had I known about this forum I would have known better.

Well most drill presses only have 2-3" of travel, some big industrial versions may have up to 5" but that is really overkill. Travel isn't too important really except when facing/drilling the mortise, other than that all the holes can be drilled by adjusting the height of the table carefully as needed.

(Sorry to get off topic!)
I'm able to get by with the drill, but I have to move the platform out of the way sometimes...and...sometimes have to raise the briar up farther with the drill in it to then finish the hole and I had to cut my drills down to about 4" or 5" long. In this picture the platform is in it's lowest position.

But, thanks for your information, I feel a "little" better about the drill press now!
