When to rusticate

Post by BigCasino »

I tried searching the forum but I couldn't find anything my question is in what stage of the finish do you rusticate?

I was planning on doing most of the sanding except for the last two grits then I was going to do the rustication and then finish with the fine grits?

Depends on what kind of rustication you are going for. If it's really deep and lumpy, you don't have to sand with any fine grits - get the pipe mostly shaped and have at 'er. If it's a finer rustication, your shaping needs to be that much finer.

Depending on your finish, you may or may not sand at all after rusticating. I ordinarily don't as it leaves "fake" looking flat spots that have a different texture. Sometimes a wire brush is a good idea to knock of crumbs and kind of take the edge off the texture if it's sharp or unpleasant in hand.

If its partial rustication then roughly mark out your smooth areas and sand these all the way to finished, then do your rustication.
