Pipemakers' Meet Up Agenda (and news about accommodations)

Post by Tyler »

An agenda is slowly coming together for the weekend -- we're getting close! Let me quickly say that things are loose and casual. This is more a meeting of friends than a formal event. That said, here are some of the plans in no particular order:

Finishing smooths -- Premal
Laser engravers -- Charles H (Oklahoma Red)
Cigar rolling -- Quinton swells
Meet the Maker dinner -- OKC pipe club invited to dinner Saturday night. Club member Brad Morse is catering the event with his amazing BBQ
Collaboration pipe(s?)-- all makers participate
(More to come -- feel free to contact me if you have any ideas/requests/etc.)

Pipe making will be ongoing the whole time.

In other news, my family is clearing out for the weekend. I believe I have given all the beds away to the people that are traveling the farthest, but all are welcome to sleep at my house. If I haven't spoken to you about staying here, you are still welcome. Just bring a sleeping bag (and air mattress) and you can avoid the expense of a hotel if so desired. I have plenty of room, so don't be overly concerned about too little space. We have five full bathrooms, so even that shouldn't be a problem.

I'm thinking of offering something along the lines of the following:

Military mounts
Making your own military mount cutting bit
Using a DRO on a lathe
Bamboo shanks

Something else?

Thoughts?

Another thought: a dry-erase white board might be handy. Pictures/sketches are always useful.

Tyler,

You said there's no need to give you a heads-up if bringing a sleeping bag, but my inner courtesy-bot requires it. Please put BOTH me and Quinton on the floor list.

as much as I like the look of horn, this veg just couldn't do it.... would love to see the process though. I'm thinking along these lines:

maybe it's just a tooling issue, but I can't quite sort out how to add an extension to a bent-shank freehand-drill.... or maybe I can get there, by back roads, but I'd like to see the more elegant solution.

looking forward to seeing everyone!

Seamonster,

I don't want to be insensitive, but... does your kind have the manual dexterity required to deal with fiddly details like shank extensions?

Ok Jeremy, easy peasy. You'll do shanks extensions in your sleep by the time you leave here.

Would it be helpful if I bring a couple mostly shaped stummels, as fodder?

I'll be there! I've got family on the east side of OKC so I'll stay with them.
The subjects covered sound great. Especially the military mount bit(I haven't done that yet), I'm still a newb so this is exciting, just coming up on 2years of pipe making. I had emailed you Tyler when you posted on IG, but thought I'd post on here to make it official.
