Lathe Question

Post by CapeCodJay »

Hey Guys,

So I was fortunate enough to come by a nice lathe this weekend.

However I have a questions as to the type of Jaw Chucks you guys are using?

The kind it has is clearly not going to cut it (no pun intended) and I'd be curious as to the type you guys are using?

Any suggestions, or information, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

This is the lathe here: http://www.harborfreight.com/5-speed...the-65345.html

It just has the live center spurs.

I'd like to turn the pipe bowls and shanks and stems.

I have the 1-8 adapter that is required for the jaws, just not sure what sizes/type are best fits for pipe turning

I wouldn't want a lathe that can't take a drill chuck for the tail stock. I turn my bowls on a wood lathe.

That's exactly the lathe that I use...

Then, again... I always do everything wrong anyway, so pay no attention to me.

I'll shut up now.

You should be able to find a drill chuck for the tail stock and you'll need a scroll chuck for the headstock side. Check out penn state industries or grizzly for some decent prices. I use the penn state utility chuck with only 2 tower jaws to hold stummels for drilling and it's been doing pretty good. If I was doing this more regularly I would probably upgrade to a dedicated set of jaws for holding briar.

Assuming that the live center in the tailstock comes out, and further assuming that it is a morse taper (#1 or #2 most likely), then you need a Jacobs-type chuck for that end. On the spindle end, if you have a 1" by 8 tpi spindle, then you buy a chuck that fits that or at least that can be adapted to fit that - Oneway will likely work on that lathe, but again, this depends on the actual fitments on the machine. Then custom jaws or the tower jaws oneway sells will get you going. At this point, you'll have spent more on your chuck then on your lathe, and are well on your way to saving money by making your own pipes!

Your link didn't show me the lathe. The folks here will be an enormous help to you. Try smokindawg for chuck jaws. He can tell you if he can make what you need. Best of luck.

Jason, if this is the lathe your talking about then I can give you some ideas. It's a copy of the Delta Midi lathe I started out with before going to a metal lathe. Jet also makes one like it as well, or vice versa rather.

http://www.harborfreight.com/5-speed-be ... 65345.html

It should have a 1"x 8" spindle thread and there are many companies that make a decent wood chuck that will work on it. I actually use a chuck made by Grizzly and they have one that will fit that lathe.

This one takes the two bars to tighten it.

This one takes a hex key to tighten
http://www.grizzly.com/products/4-Jaw-W ... -TPI/H6265

I can make jaws for either, but even though it cost more, I prefer the second one. I can make jaws for either as long as I have the measurements for the jaw hold down pattern.

The only thing I found with my chuck like that is the screws that hold the jaws on are smaller on that chuck than the ones on a nova or oneway. I drilled my two out for the bigger screws and have never had any problem with the grizzly chuck and I use the one made for my Jet 9x20.

Harbor Freight made 2 versions of that lathe, the first was #1MT in the headstock and tailstock, the later ones have #2MT and 1-8TPI spindle threads. The chucks in the above links are good chucks. Another option is the Penn State Industries chucks, PSI also has a drill chuck that fits the tailstock.

I would recommend the PSI Barracuda 2, it's a good first chuck because it comes with all the different jaws which will come in handy doing stem work, drilling delrin, etc.

Then get some of Steve's jaws for it.

Here is a tailstock chuck that will serve you well and won't break the bank.

These are just my .02 cents, hope it helps
