Lathe project

Post by cmueller »

Well, I bought a Logan lathe 9 for a winter project. Once it's done, I hope to only have 500 in it with basic tooling, quick change, and jacobs chuck. When I went to look at the lathe it was stored outside under a tarp and rusted to shit. However, none of the gears were chipped, the bed did not have a lot of wear from what I could tell with my hands, and everything turned (well, sort of, there was a lot of old grease and rust so the carriage, spindle, and cross slide slowly moved. Picts are below.

I worked on it for 2 1/2 weeks, lots of elbow grease, electrolysis, and new paint and it's all done. It works great so far. Once the tail stock comes this week, it will be done. Tell me what you think. Thanks, Craig.

Nice work! Sounds like you made out pretty well with the elbow grease. You're a braver soul than I would be.

Great job! Contact Logan with the serial number (right end of bed) and they can tell you when it was made. Mine is a '43.

Wow, that's a lot more work than I would have been prepared to do. Looks great though and I hope it turns out to be worthwhile :)

Yip, way too much work for me as well. It looks great, though! Like a brand new lathe.

No real updates yet. I found a tailstock on eBay but when I got it, it was for the wrong lathe and was miss-marked. So, after I returned that, I finally found the right one that was complete complete from a great place in VT. It should be here in a week. Once it's complete and set up I'll post some updated Picts. Restoring an old machine is rewarding. I almost want to do another one soon, but I do not need another one. However, I've been wanting a Hardinge lathe. I'll have to really sell a load of pipes for that though.

I restored my little Craftsman/Dunlap lathe and it was fun but, now I wish I could feed it something to make it grow.
