Band-saw or fretsaw ?

Which one is the most effective to rough-hew the briar block ?

Bandsaw. Have you seen the blades they use on scroll saws? You gonna use 5 blades per block.

Thanks. It is of what I also thought. I have never used a fretsaw but I liked having your opinion.

Definitely bandsaw. You will be ready to totally quit pipe making if you have to use a fret saw. Now there is such a thing as a coping saw which is a step up from a fret saw but not by much. One with a coarse blade would work if you had nothing else.

In the absence of a machine sander and/or bandsaw, a coping saw will save a lot of time if making a pipe with hand tools.

Yeah a coping saw is handy to have, very cheap and useful for many projects aside from pipe making. Even though I have a bandsaw I still use one quite often for removing large bits of material in awkward areas of the pipe, situations where it would be too dangerous (either safety or ruining the shape) to do on the bandsaw.

LIL. A good coping saw is helpful. There are a lot of bad ones being made, unfortunately. This Olsen coping saw is much better than what you'll find at the home centers: https://www.toolsforworkingwood.com/sto ... MS-COPE.XX The Olsen blades are good, too. The Pegasus blades aren't bad either, and are easier to find.

Thank you. I am going to get that one. Every few months there is a loud "SNAP" in the work shop. It is the coping saw snapping. Cheap ole hardware store model.
