Metal lathe to turn stummels

Post by RDPowell »

I've heard talk of some pipe makers using a metal lathe to turn there stummels, etc.
But, I've not seen one video using one and was wondering what there set up looks like and how they use it.
I'm asking because that's all I have and I can't afford another lathe nor do I have the room for it in my 8 x 11 shop.
I might also add, I'm new to lathe work but, learning and have turned a couple of stummels already on it but, didn't have
the knowledge to make what I wished nor could I figure out how to cut some angles. Do some use a wood lathe tool post and gouges?
Do some us the metal lathe's tool post and standard HSS bits. How does one put the beveled on a bulldog? etc.
Any insight will surely be appreciated.

I put a long piece of square stock in the tool holder and use it as a rest for turning tools. Most of my rough shaping I just do with a tool bit in the holder, etch a sketch style.

Thanks guys, I've looked on Youtube and have yet to find one using a metal lathe.
Of course there's got to be several hundred videos on pipe making.
I'll check out your video Caswith.

Alden, I've tried that but being my lathe is not a full size one I can only use a 1/4" block which is really not stable enough.

Scottie, I haven't a clue who Chris or Steve is, sorry.

I need some links to videos, can't seem to find yours Caswith, not anyone using a metal lathe.
Truthfully most the videos I do find are amateur pipe makers with the exception of Tyler's and Walt Cannoy's which don't use a metal lathe.
Maybe I'm using the wrong search title (Briar pipe making).

Bill Shalosky made a video turning a pipe on a metal lathe with hand tools a few years or so ago. He was doing it on a Jet 9 x 20.

Good news, Ryan invited me over to show me a thing or two, didn't think I'd find anyone out in this neck of the woods.
And as obliging as he is, a very kind man to say the least. :notworthy:

Lots of people have thought that. "What can go wrong?" they said. "Yeah, he lives way out in the boonies, has a mysterious shed behind his house, and there seem to be a lot of chainsaws lying about, but he's very kind..."

They said.

Now, their whereabouts are unknown. Even a few sheriff's deputies who went to investigate just, well... vanished.
