just found this in the shop...4 jaw chuck

will this be useful for holding briar?
I'm guessing I should remove 2 of the jaws....

Yes, you can do just that. However, I personally would not trust it to adequately hold a block. You need wider and deeper jaws. Contact Trent Rudat athttp://www.briarpipetooling.com. Check the pics that go by and you'll see one of this same chuck after modification. A plus is that you'll now have the pins that allow you swivel the block for drilling alignment.

You can but it isn't ideal. A very useful piece of equipment to have though, will let you work on lots of odd shaped items.
